TARP Cost Will Be Less Than Once Thought
The reviled mother of all government bailouts — the $700 billion lifeline to banks, insurance and auto companies — will expire at a fraction of that cost and could conceivably earn taxpayers a profit. That was not the idea. The banks are not back in the banking business. -

Elite Colleges, or Colleges for the Elite?
Giving preference to children of alumni during the admissions process is basically affirmative action for the rich.YES! I think it a good thing. They subsidize the rest of us in theory. There needs to be some ambition to enliven the classes. The management has forgotten this. -

Singapore Math Adopted in More U.S. Schools
“How to make math easy for elementary school students? Go slow. - http://nyti.ms/aup8vJ via @cityroom”
Math is easy.Learning it is not. Those who are trying to teach it do not understand this.It is just a series of intellectual tools created to solve problems.Detailed commentary later. As I read the article it looks an awful lot like the technique Otto Bachmeister used to tutor the "slow learners" when I was a child. They would go to business school.

The Elizabeth Warren Fallacy
“Defn. of opinion--bias and anecdote overwhelm intellectual rigor. Perfect ex. from NYT: The Elizabeth Warren Fallacy - http://nyti.ms/cBThsz”Here we have another Republican whining about an effort to save the government money by ending the money lenders traditional exploitation of the greedy suckers among us. I wonder how the author submitted it with a straight face

Invasion of Privacy Charges After Death of Tyler Clementi
Tyler Clementi killed himself after an intimate encounter was broadcast.
It would be far better to force the social acceptability of obligate gay children. This would involve a state interference with religion. At another court this might be acceptable under the constitution. It is borderline.
If trials for witchcraft are forbidden trials for homosexuality should also be forbidden, whether they are formal or by a mob.
