Japan Goes From Dynamic to Disheartened
Economists are pointing to Japan, which has been trapped in low growth and deflation, as a dark vision of the future for the West.
Cassandra never gets any credit.  The prescription for this ill is well known by those who have been willing to consider the possibility of this trap.  Our world has been in this situation before.  Not so very long ago it was a regular feature of life.  Selective memory got us into this mess.  It won't get us out.   For the presently wealthy the cure is worse than the disease.
It appears that wealth must perish before we can build new wealth.

Benoît Mandelbrot, Novel Mathematician, Dies at 85
Dr. Mandelbrot, a maverick mathematician, developed an innovative theory to study uneven shapes and applied it to physics, biology and many other fields.
As the originators die we who remain must think for ourselves. We have been shown a way. We must find the limits.

The Rage Won’t End on Election Day
The radical right’s anger is becoming less focused, more free-floating and more likely to claim minorities like gays, Latinos and Muslims as collateral damage.
Self loathing and denial drive a political diaspora. Responsibility does not feel comforting.

    iPhones for Toddlers
Smartphones may mollify a fussy toddler, but does this new Toy of Choice inhibit a child’s development?  I very much doubt it.  The results will start to come in soon.

So let's take a walk.  The party can go on without us.

Sunnis in Iraq Allied With U.S. Quitting to Rejoin Rebels
The loss of fighters whose switch to the government’s side four years ago was pivotal in pulling Iraq back from sectarian warfare poses a new threat in Iraq.
How could this not have been included in the calculations?  Ignorance is the norm.

U.S. Had Warnings About Plotter of Mumbai Attack
American officials received warnings from two wives of David Headley, who was the chief reconnaissance scout for the attacks that killed 163 people in Mumbai, that he was planning such an attack.
    Don't whine, fix it.
