    The Pain Caucus

Anyone who has done any reading about the Great Depression is aware that Franklin Roosevelt, after making a good start on attacking the crisis, succumbed to pressure to reduce the deficits and, thereby, erased most of the progress made at the beginning of his administration. Knowing that historical lesson is one thing, but not until one has witnessed the daily political pressure to cut spending is it possible to understand how easy it is to make the same mistake F.D.R. made. It is vital that we support a continued effort to create jobs, even though that effort will entail running a federal deficit for the next two years. Two? Try ten. The deficit spending must continue until domestic industry is rebuilt. We can tax uninvested funds. Inflation or the threat of it is the tool of choice.

  • Investment in productive industry is what we need. The government will not be allowed to do that. Socialism is still feared.
  • The Pain Caucus
    • We need vast repairs to the nation's bridges and roadways, yet we are paying unemployed workers to stay at home, 99 weeks and counting. People with productive jobs are hit up for 30% or more in taxes, yet a hedge fund manager pays 15% tax on a multi-billion dollar income. We have banks foreclosing on homeowners and kicking them out of their homes rather than reduce the monthly payments, perversely preferring to receive ZERO payments. They do get the house. it is still not worth the debt. The banks then abandon the houses to vandalism and the elements, leaving us with homeless people AND empty homes (Carrying charges - taxes do not stop)-- and elected officials that can't figure out what to do about either problem. Billions of dollars in bailout money flows unimpeded into the pockets of the very people who blew up the economy(Can you say moral hazard? The game is life). Confronted with what can only be described as systemic idiocy, it it any wonder that people are angry and confused, willing to elect demagogues and ideologues like Rand Paul in a desperate effort to "throw the bums out" of Washington? None to me. The business pages just do not comprehend that their model is wrong where it is not incomplete. The pain will be theirs as well as ours.

Many questions for potential priests are aimed at deciding whether gay applicants should be denied admission.

“But it has to do with our view of marriage,” he said. “A priest can only give his life to the church in the sense that a man gives his life to a female spouse. A homosexual man cannot have the same relationship. It’s not about condemning anybody. It’s about our world view.”"

It sure looks like a witch hunt to me.

Mr Douthat, The study you are referring to in 'The Birds and the Bees' can hardly be called scientific, and the Institute of American Values' credentials are dubious at best. Yet 99% of the empirical evidence regarding homosexual activity supports the Christian appraisal of it." How would one make 'empirical' such suposed "evidence"? The motivations of this organization are clear, and if you wish to highlight the activities and 'studies' promulgated by this organization, a clear statement addressing the organizations' mission would better inform your reader audience of possible biases, particularly ones that spew propaganda such as (in the same article) that 'homosexual promiscuity' makes the spread of AIDs virus "more efficient" and paedophilia "more likely". If they actually do this, it is the very definition of throwing down.

Wow.

Does Israel want a war with Turkey? They can’t win it, short of using nukes, and Turkey is a NATO member, if Israel attacks NATO ships, Turkey can invoke Article V (in fact, they can invoke it already, since the ships were attacked by a non NATO power on the high seas.) If Turkey does so, of course NATO nations will refuse, but doing so will break NATO.

This is high stakes.

Update: I might add that in the case of a war between Turkey and Israel, if Turkey is serious, unless Israel uses nukes, my money is on the Turks. They have a huge armored corp, and the nations between Israel and Turkey aren’t going to say no if Turkey asks for access (because if they do, Turkey will just roll right through them.) Also if Turkey and Israel goes to war, it’s at least 50/50 the Egypt jumps in as well.

Israel is really playing with fire on this one.

While many scream for alternative energy sources have they thought those out? More nuclear reactors? Where do we put the spent fuel rods? Seems Yucca Mtn. is still a point of contestation. What is clear is our dependence on oil will continue for some time. The question is do we import it or try and get it domestically? We are stuck with deepwater rigs for the same reason that opposition to wind turbines upset the people in Massachusessetts and Martha's Vineyard. The fear of rigs close to the coasts resulted in huge outrage as dangerous and unsightly. But perhaps more manageable? Then we have those opposed to Alaskan drilling because of caribou and other animals. And every one comes back to cite the Exxon Valdez incident. Has everyone forgotten that the skipper was drunk? So we have wells drilled at a mile or more underwater. Incredible pressure generated at those depths, but how is it that many sea creatures thrive at those depths or sustain life in superheated plumes at even deeper levels? Where is science in understanding these things. I'd sooner see beaucoup dollars spent on oceanic research than dumping monies into a space stace or going back to the moon, because I don't think moon rocks are edible.

  • That does it for that.

U.S. Plans ‘for Worst’ in Gulf, Seeing Risk in Leak Strategy

The President is showing a lack of leadership that's very disappointing. For the Governor of LA to have to get on television and beg for resources is insulting beyond imagination. Over the last year and a half the President gave a couple of trillion public dollars to private business. Now it's time for one these agents of evil to pay the public. BP has enormous resources. For them to be telling us they will honor all legitimate claims is bizarre. We should be telling them. The President should collect the money in advance (start with a 20 billion down payment) and assure LA and the other gulf states and all the injured parties that money is in hand and is being disbursed efficiently. We made you and you work for us, not big oil, Barack. Stop the usual political bs. Get off your butt, show some moxie, and get the money. NOW! Just ignore this troll.

The governor of Louisiana is a Republican. His interests are his party's. The troll wants to hear the screams from business about NEW TAXES.

There are far too many bloody shirts in these pages. Screams and riot will not stop the well.

let me throw a few numbers at this mess. water is incompressible. it is as dense at the surface as it is a mile deep. the pressure at 5000 feet down is about 2000psi

I would not expect to see bubbles.

The well is a further 13,000 feet deep. Water pressure at the bottom of the well would be 8000 psi. 5000 psi higher than the pressure on the well head.

"Mud" pressure would about twice water pressure. 16000 psi plus pump pressure in a full pipe mud to the bottom of the well situation. maybe 17000 psi. I gathered from the comment stream at "the oil drum" that the hydrocarbon pressure at the well head, 5000 feet down, is about 13,000 psi. This will not be countered by 5000 psi mud. There was never any hope of top kill working. They did manage to suppress the hydrocarbon flow so they did get more than 12, 000 psi mud pressure at the well head. Those are some hoses. The pumps were way over redline. Valiant effort, no prise.

The oil business must learn. BP is the walking dead.

I'm getting a little sick of the line that Obama is "aloof." Having spent many years in academia, I recognize Obama's temperament, and can assure you that Barack Obama is neither "aloof" nor unemotional. He merely approaches problem-solving intellectually, not viscerally. Most of my friends do the same, and none of us could fairly be described bas "aloof" or "cold"; on the contrary, we are rather engaged and, at times, passionate about the things in which be believe. We just don't beat our breasts and weep. More power to her, but I'm not Oprah.

The difference between President Obama and most analytical types is that he is both a good empathizer and a natural orator. Therefore, he is able to channel his ideas into inspiring speeches. Yet even in those speeches, you can see his mind at work. Indeed, it is seeing that excellent mind at work that convinced me to vote for him, and assures me now that he will find a way out of this BP mess.

As for the mess: in plain English, there is a big, big hole gushing oil, really, really deep in the ocean, and no known technology that can plug it up. Obama and his administration are working steadily through BP and the oil industry -- which have access to the cutting edge technology, such as it is and isn't -- to find a solution to the problem. Then we will take whoever at BP caused this mess and indict his or her butt.

The President has also repeatedly expressed his view that what is happening is unforgivable, horrible and a national tragedy. What else do you expect him to do? Publicly appeal to the Delphi Oracle? (Although I like the idea of offering up a few right-wing commentators as human sacrifices.)

    • It depends on the student. Usually it is not. Pick your battles.

Alabama Goes Viral

This has been a peculiar political year even for Alabama, where viral campaign videos are turning heads.

Mr. Hopper, whose portrayals of drug-addled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films "Easy Rider," "Apocalypse Now" and "Blue Velvet" drew on his early out-of-control experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, was 74.

This is a sad loss. Dennis Hopper was One of a Kind and Hollywood and the Film World needs more unique people like Mr Hopper .. these days they are just interchangeable Barbie Dolls and Kens. I met him once, over 30 years ago, and he was a charming gentleman and I always had a soft spot in my heart for him after. He will be missed.

I enjoyed his films I saw.

The Moynihan Future

Forty-five years after his report on black America, Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s analysis is just as pressing.

Nation building is difficult.

The Hard Sell on Salt

The salt industry is working overtly and behind the scenes to fend off public-health attacks on salt, using a shifting set of tactics that have defeated similar efforts for 30 years.

I fight the salt battle every day. It is medically required. 2 grams a day is the limit.

I do it.

An Unnatural Disaster

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is the latest disaster to result from an unholy alliance of government and giant corporations.

Documents Show Earlier Worries About Safety of Rig

BP's indifference to safety is beginning to sound depraved.

An Unnatural Disaster

Ain't it about money? How much do politicians get? I would like to think there were mostly Republicans who have hemmed and hawed about the debacle in the Gulf, but the Dems can't be ignored as beneficiaries as well. And let's not forget the Supreme Court and it's decision to treat corporations as human beings in regards to free speech. Are we all from Alabama? Thank you Mr. Herbert for your column today, but I fear that it will hardly be noticed in the halls of the White House or the Congress. The Louisiana congressman caught with $90,000 in his refrigerator has nothing on the above.

Give Them Something They Can Feel

When it comes to the BP oil spill, President Obama should show more emotion and less reserve.

Give Them Something They Can Feel

Equating reserve with incompetence is ludicrous. It is reserve that allows an individual to maintain focus on the task at hand. Visceral emotion however normally indicates a going-off-half-cocked response. It would be this observer's guess therefore that you, Mr. Blow, are not as intelligent as you present yourself.

‘Top Kill’ Fails to Plug Leak; BP Readies Next Approach

BP said that its latest attempt to stop the oil well was unsuccessful, and the effort was being scrapped in favor of yet another maneuver to stem the flow spreading into gulf waters.

There is nothing further the president can or should do about the run away well.

There is a great deal to be done about the MMS.
