U.S. Military Orders Less Dependence on Fossil Fuels
With insurgents attacking American fuel supply convoys into Afghanistan, the military is pushing renewable energy sources like solar power.
Solar power is good. So are wind and biofuels.  They will not solve the logistics problem.  Helicopters are fuel hogs so are tanks and trucks.
Mules can forage.  Horses not so much.  No one likes camels and lamas have very limited capacity.  How nineteenth century.  Pakistan needs to do more than make nice noises.  The planners have forgotten their history and their thermodynamics.

    How Not to Fight Colds
Boosting your immune system could only make your cold symptoms worse.

"So susceptibility to cold symptoms is not a sign of a weakened immune system, but quite the opposite. And if you’re looking to quell those symptoms, strengthening your immune system may be counterproductive. It could aggravate the symptoms by amplifying the very inflammatory agents that cause them."

There are monsters.  I have encountered very few of them.  Connecticut has rather loose gun laws.  I don't know what to conclude from this.  If there was a gun in the house, would that have made a difference?   It is not clear from the report.

Japan Recycles Rare Earth Minerals From Used Electronics
“Japan Recycles Rare Earth Minerals From Used Electronics - http://nyti.ms/9Yg2r0 ”
We no longer manufacture these components. We could ship this waste to Japan.

"In Kosaka, Dowa Holdings, the company that mined here for over a century, has built a recycling plant whose 200-foot-tall furnace renders old electronics parts into a molten stew from which valuable metals and other minerals can be extracted. The salvaged parts come from around Japan and overseas, including the United States."

Two Win Nobel for Work on Ultra-Thin Material
Two Russian-born scientists shared the 2010 Nobel Prize for physics for experiements with graphene, a super-thin carbon material.
Much faster than they usually are.  Not a prize prize.  Much of the work on carbon is quite old.

    That’s Where the Money Is
John Boehner is the quintessential example of shameless government figures guiding the fortunes of the rich and powerful.
Nice of mr. Herbert to notice.  Where was he last year?

Interesting who wants to suppress things.  I think I remember that porn is supremely uninteresting to pre-adolescent children.

A game played for blood.  Sub-national politics is where most of the power is.  The democratic idea is that it not be a top down command system.
      Good luck to him.

Beyond the "It gets  better project" and the thought that NJ needs to lighten up a bit I have nothing to add.  The Kid did not wait for the pain to build.  He was his own worst enemy.
