Online Learning Is Growing on Campus
Online education is finding its way into more colleges, many of them public institutions facing tight budgets.
It can work.  It needs more production and promotion than administrations want to give it.  Treat it as a really big lecture hall.

As H.I.V. Babies Age, Effects, and Stigma, Linger
Some H.I.V. babies now entering adulthood are struggling with the epidemic’s legacy.
    Legacy?
    Ran the videos.

Jill Clayburgh, Oscar-Nominated Actress, Dies at 66
Ms. Clayburgh, who began her career on Broadway in the late 1960s, received two Oscar nominations for her screen work.
    I was unaware of her.

Dead Coral Found Near Site of Gulf Oil Spill
The large swaths of darkened coral were almost certainly dying from exposure to toxins, scientists said.

    "Seek and ye shall find"

Jane Lubchenco, the administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, called the findings significant. “Given the toxic nature of oil and the unprecedented amount of oil spilled, it would be surprising if we did not find damage,” she said in a statement. “This is precisely why we continue to actively monitor and evaluate the impact of the spill in the gulf.”
“We are determined to hold the responsible parties accountable for the damage done to the environment,” she added.

    Tone-Deaf in D.C.
Both political parties seem tone-deaf to the hopes and needs of an anxious electorate.
It sure does seem that way.  Bob Herbert may be on to something.  Maybe truth.

There’s More Than One Way to Apply to College
“There’s More Than One Way to Apply to College - http://nyti.ms/aq9EHB#collegeapplication”
This presumes that the student has no opinion on the subject.

My understanding is that graduate schools are different.

    The Great American Cleaving
Exit polls from the midterms suggest that instead of moving toward the middle, we are drifting toward the extremes.
    This is a bad thing?
There seem to be no transcendent politicians.
Like slavery, there is no neutral corner.
There is nothing quite so ugly as a civil war.
The right cannot think.  Our opposition will find no advantage in thinking.
The current military is of the right.
Building another looks to be a next step.  We have the bodies.

While Warning About Fat, U.S. Pushes Cheese Sales
Despite warnings about saturated fat, the government has engaged in an effort to get dairy back into Americans’ diets, primarily through cheese.
Usually this kind of cross purposes indicate differing priorities.
Dairying converts grass into people food.
    (  http://www.cowsoutside.com/  )  Let's do it right this time.
You will not need very much to be very satisfied.

The heavily promoted stuff is not worth eating.
Grain fed dairy, indeed, is dangerous.   Not just to the people who eat it.

      Midwest at Dusk
      “Midwest at Dusk - http://nyti.ms/d4R51b”

David Brooks is following his standard column form.
To understand him, go to the end and see the initial lie.

Then look to see how he build a chain to take him to observed fact.
He then had to do two things.
      Invert his reasoning.
      Treat each step as inevitable.
The Jesuits did a wonderful job with him.
