      A Radical Treasure
      “A Radical Treasure - http://nyti.ms/9Q6Z1J”

      Yet another reading project.
I have read very little that you did not point to for the last three years.  They have passed quickly.  At he beginning of 1976 I wrapped depression around me and was reborn as a near innocent. I thought I had put the past aside But it kept sneaking in to shape my decisions.  Then you showed in the beginning of 2000 and I was overwhelmed by ambition with no outlet.

How Chris Christie Did His Homework
“How Chris Christie Did His Homework - http://nyti.ms/hAu4U2”
A budgeted future cost is not a present debt. This years budget must cover this years expenditures, Not the entire future commitment.
      Get the accounting right.
The state of New Jersey has been stealing the pension funds several ways. This is not the problem of the future recipients of the benefits.
The State of New Jersey did not contract for medical coverage at fixed price.  Again not the problem of the workers who did contract for medical coverage from the state of New Jersey.
Christie is a lawyer. He knows the price of theft.
His only real choice is to raise taxes to carry the contractual costs and the borrowing that will be necessary to replace the purloined cash.  The taxes cannot be property taxes, he has capped those. A corporate tax will simply further depress business. Business can defer income indefinitely. A significant sales tax would drive commerce to the Internet. The personal income tax could save the state from chapter 11 but it would damn him and his party.
       I would celebrate that.
I think New Jersey is committed to court management under chapter 11.  I don't see how to send the state government to jail.

Ditch Your Laptop, Dump Your Boyfriend

"The college year went by, bringing a lot of new people and priorities into our separate lives. The following fall, we realized that all our growing pains had not diminished what was a very precious connection. We ended up getting back together and staying together through the rest of college. But we had to break up first.
      — REBECCA ELLIOTT, Ph.D. student in the sociology department at the University of California, Berkeley"
We have not yet properly reconnected.

Publishers Look Beyond Bookstores to Help Sales
As the big bookstores change course, publishers are pushing into new stores, like Michaels and Lowe’s, hoping to catch shoppers’ eyes.
    Same as it ever was

Collective Bargaining Can Help Lower Deficits
We should work to modernize government’s relationship with unions — and union leaders should be farsighted enough to cooperate.
It can but legislation is not the way.

There is nothing new in this.  The megastores were the innovation.
We must rationalize copyright. Perhaps there really is a market for Print on demand.  Mostly printers have not been fast enough and bindings far too demanding.
