France Is Scolded Over Care of Great Hamster of Alsace
The European Union’s highest court ruled that France had failed to protect the Great Hamster of Alsace, the last wild hamster species in Western Europe.
If France can do no better than this for nature Rouseau had no models.

Employers Spend on Equipment Rather Than Hiring
As the economy recovers, companies’ capital spending is growing faster than their spending on employees, encouraged by tax breaks and falling prices for equipment.
Stagnation is not an accident, it is a goal.
Mechanized plant is cheap to operate but inflexible.

Leonard B. Stern, Creator of Mad Libs, Dies at 88
Mr. Stern, an Emmy-winning television writer, created Mad Libs as he tried to find the right word for a script.
We must find a better way to discover talent.

Defense Secretary Warns NATO of ‘Dim’ Future
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates bluntly criticized NATO nations on Friday, warning of “a dim if not dismal future” for an alliance at risk of becoming irrelevant.
Nato was designed to battle The Soviet Union.  It is now without a purpose.  The alliance must change or die.

    The Earth Is Full
We are in denial about the severity of the climate crisis and just how big of a response is going to be needed.
It is beyond it's carrying capacity.  Either we reduce the load or crash.
Crashing is easy but very messy.  Load reduction is much harder.
Load reduction involves having the death rate exceed the birth rate or more efficient living or both. These are choices I don't want to make for myself or for others.  Malthus was always right.

Gingrich Aides Quit en Masse Over Conflicts
Newt Gingrich’s campaign imploded as his top advisers resigned, setting off a further exodus of aides and battering his hopes of a political comeback.
A dramatic ending.  May there be no rebirth.

At Age 90, Philip Philip’s Tongue Is Sharp as Ever
He’s been called both a survivor of Britain’s imperial age and a national embarrassment, but Queen Elizabeth’s consort shows no sign on cutting back on his wildly offensive witticisms.
It is enough that he stands up as required.  He is a relict and knows it.
There is no breath of scandal that I have heard.

    How Tyrants Endure
Wealthy dictators can ward off revolution; poorer ones will have no choice but to democratize.
A reasonable first approximation.  There is a lot of homework between my uncertainty and a solid argument.

Egypt’s Economy Slows to a Crawl; Revolt Is Tested
In a region where economic woes enraged an entire generation, whether and how Egypt can fix its broken finances will be a key factor in determining the revolution’s success.

After five decades of cold shoulders from presidents, Puerto Ricans are primed for a presidential visit, even if it is brief and unlikely to address the debate over the island’s identity.

The new “X-Men” film is more than a summer flick. It’s historical fiction.

I have never had any patience with this mess.
I have preferred tales of clever rather than tales of power.
