      The Phony Tough-on-Terror Crowd
The White House idles as Congress lurches toward another unneeded law on detainees.
      " Tougher than thou" posturing.
These loud political noises will have real consequences.

Got Twitter? What's Your Influence Score
Companies are scouring social networks, looking for the new “influencers.”
    Another attempt at aristocracy.
" Attaining true influence requires time and commitment. And while your flesh-and-blood self deserves a break every now and then, your digital self will pay the price."
    I have a nasty imagination.

Atop TV Sets, a Power Drain Runs Nonstop
The little boxes that usher cable signals and digital recording capacity into televisions have become the single-largest electricity drain in many American homes.
This is a really ugly way of proceeding.   If the service requires many minutes to come up from cold, pitch it. There is no reason for a system to require any more standby power than is required to run the clock.  Linux has solved the the save and restart problem. It restarts in seconds.

The Road to Gay Marriage in New York
To get same-sex marriage passed in New York, a strategic governor, Wall Street donors and gay-rights advocates showed more might than an ineffective opposition.
This was a result of some very powerful people recognizing that gay is not a choice.

Hip Implants Show That New Is Not Always Improved
Metal hip implants are one example of unexpected problems coming from seeming medical breakthroughs.
Artificial joints are wonders when they work.  What is required in future is better knowledge of the conditions.  The patients at risk now should get regular checks and early replacement.

Insiders Sound an Alarm Amid a Natural Gas Rush
As investment floods into shale wells, concerns about their productivity are spurring talk of a bubble.
This does not sound good for the gas production companies.
The whole business is the wrong thing to do.  It drops the price of fossil carbon.  A subsidy would be very wrong.

    Why Is He Bi? (Sigh)
The One likes to have it two ways at once.
    Maureen Dowd
is very interested in getting our president beat up for no gain.
    It would be spectacular.
President Obama does not need the noise.

College Degrees Are Valuable Even for Careers That Don’t Require Them
Skeptics say college is overrated, but those with degrees make more even when their jobs don’t require higher education.
This says to me that High Schools are not doing their job.
This may be because the lower grades are missfunctioning or that parents are messing up.  My quick studies do not tell me.

Why Science Struggles to Correct Its Mistakes
The field fixes its errors with more difficultly than it would have you believe.
Peer review is supposed to deal with this.
Bad papers are supposed to never see the light of day.
The Arsenic study read as plausible.  It made no wild claims.
I would not be at all surprised if the paper stands.
The Daryl Bem paper is another matter.  It may be an experiment on academic psychology.  That would comfort me.
As it stands the editor and the peer review panel are at fault.
Refutations are not the same as replications.
Peer review must be about the repute of the journal and not personal politics.

    On the Electric Car’s Future
The thrill of driving the Chevrolet Volt comes from being in control of how much gasoline you use.
Joe Nocera may be a paid flack.
The hybrid in any form is a bad solution.  If you must own a car get a leaf or other all electric.  For projects that exceed the electric's practical range there is Zip Car or the other rental companies.
There is no need to haul a gas engine around.  It hauls you on demand.

Bitter philosophical divisions in the Wisconsin Supreme Court reportedly took a physical turn shortly before the release of a ruling on collective bargaining.

The Same-Sex Marriage Battle Blurs Political and Ideological Lines.
Those who seem to be unlikely supporters of same-sex marriage have had their opinions influenced by knowing someone who is gay.
Gay is not a choice.  Not gay is also not a choice.  I am wondering about Bi.

My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant
A reporter talks about his illegal American dream.
I caught most of a radio interview.  He did not want to marry to make the I.N.S. happy.  Gay is a possibility though less of one.

In Peru, Machu Picchu and Its Sibling Incan Ruins Along the Way
Join the crowds and take the easy way up Machu Picchu. Or follow the trail of early explorers and see a handful of rarely seen Incan masterpieces.
Two weeks among those peaks with a guide would be well worth the price.  The ruins are just a bonus.  I should have gone forty years ago.

Bridge Comes to San Francisco, With Made-in-China Label
China, in its continual move up the global economic value chain — from cheap toys to jetliners — now aims to be the world’s civil engineer.
The decision not to do the arithmetic on the contracting is criminal.
The California republicans have a great deal to answer for.
The project sounds to be on schedule.
There are so very many considerations in a project of this scale.

    Ethanol Production Wastes Corn
Thanks to Washington, 4 of every 10 ears of corn grown in America are shunted into ethanol.
This subsidy system must grind to a halt.  It could be given to the Republicans to cut.  Put sugar on the same bill.

New Online Services Offer Hope to Music Fans
New online services promise to bring order to the digital revolution, but dematerializing recorded music has its consequences for listeners, artists and the music industry.
For most of these points I just don't care.  I can make a better

Face to Face With a Mother’s Pain
An American student meets a starving mother in southern Niger, and reminds us to care.
    What happens next quarter?
I am glad this one case got help.
There are much bigger problems that led to this one disaster case.
Those problems have no real solution.
Perhaps we can go piecewise but more in the system is just more to steal.

I will sleep soon.
