New York Allows Same-Sex Marriage, Becoming Largest State to Pass Law
The law will take effect in 30 days, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed and giving the gay-rights movement new momentum.
I hope it is the necessity of political action that gets through to people.

The Road to Gay Marriage in New York
To get same-sex marriage passed in New York, a strategic governor, Wall Street donors and gay-rights advocates showed more might than an ineffective opposition.
    Now for progressive taxation.

    Them That’s Not Shall Lose
James Baldwin’s words about how expensive it is to be poor are quite relevant today. If only they could resonate with Washington politicians.
A very good argument for unions and other populist pressure groups.

    Ethanol Production Wastes Corn
Thanks to Washington, 4 of every 10 ears of corn grown in America are shunted into ethanol.
Here are programs that can be killed.

Schools Eliminating Librarians as Budgets Shrink
In New York, and school districts across the country, officials say they have little choice but to eliminate librarians, having reduced administrative staff and shed extracurricular activities.
I will be very unhappy if this report is verified.  Some of my happiest and most productive time has been spent in the stacks and at the catalogue.
The catalogue is now virtual so the stacks are more vital than ever.

Internet Security Experts Introduce Secure DNS in Singapore
Secure DNS is expected to make e-mail and e-commerce more secure, end the proliferation of passwords and raise the bar significantly for Internet scam artists, spies and troublemakers.
Any mechanical system can and will be defeated.  I do not know how this one will die.  I do not know it.

I will look for the next report.  I thought I would find something much more recent.

‘Safety Myth’ Left Japan Ripe for Nuclear Crisis
Japan’s nuclear establishment has devoted vast resources to persuade the public of the safety and necessity of nuclear power.
The convenience of such a myth is obvious.
Unfortunately it captured the regulators.  Capital needed to spend on safety and design.  This spending was sacrificed for price and profit.
Build them as well as people can figure out.  Fool proof is foolish.
    Fools are far too clever.

An Unfair Burden for the Poor
Any deal to cut the deficit must shield the most vulnerable Americans.
One group views social programs as unjustifiable.   Another views the necessity of social programs as self evident.
There is no common ground shared by these groups.

Euphoria Around Stonewall Inn as Marriage Bill Passes
Following the passage of the same-sex marriage bill, crowds gathered, screamed and embraced outside the Stonewall Inn, where the gay rights movement was born 42 years ago.
It is a victory but a small one.  There are more to be had.

Sit Up Straight to Avoid Back Problems
Get up and stretch or do exercises to strengthen your abdominal muscles, or attend classes, which will help your posture.
All good advice.  The automobile  companies do an amazing job of seat design in the front.  Back seats are not so good.  I have no intention of arriving exhausted.  Been there and done that.

Charity Goes Mobile to Enlist Teenagers in Service Projects
Do Something, a nonprofit group that urges teenagers to do civic activities, is using mobile technology in an effort to sign up 3.8 million members by 2014.
Two projects.  Educating web newcomers about the nature of postings and predators. Teaching the underlying mechanics of the medium as they are known.  I also feed birds and try not to feed rodents.

In Peru, Machu Picchu and Its Sibling Incan Ruins Along the Way
Join the crowds and take the easy way up Machu Picchu. Or follow the trail of early explorers and discover a handful of rarely seen Incan masterpieces along the way.
I am game for this.  Not this fall but next.  I need to spend much more time walking and running.  Most of my gear will need replacement.

Tyson Foods Agrees It Made Illegal Payments, but No One Was Charged
In his debut column for The Times, James B. Stewart writes about the Tyson Foods bribery case, in which no one at the company was charged despite its admission to making illegal payments to veterinarians in Mexico.

For Union Members, Public or Private, It’s Work
The common argument that public sector unions should be treated differently from their private sector counterparts is a fallacy.
I hate the shrill tone but it seems to be necessary.

I Found My Birth Mother Through Facebook
With Facebook, if you think your child needs you to find a birth parent, you are fooling yourself.
Children do grow up or at least old.  The project seems to be to force the relationships.  That is probably a good idea.  Sometimes there is more that survives than others. The best course is not obvious.

Google Is Closing Its Health Records Service
When Google Health was introduced in 2008, Marissa Mayer, a Google executive, said it would be a “large ongoing initiative” that the company hoped would attract millions of regular users.
People really hate entering up the log.  Writing things down is really the only way to keep track of them.  I can't get myself to do it.  This blog and the bookmark file are as close as I come.  Google is doing the right thing.  I really do not see the unique service. A spreadsheet stored on line is what is called for.

Same-Sex Marriage Is a Mixed Blessing
We shouldn’t have to have a wedding to affirm a loving relationship or secure health benefits.
It looks to me that this was all about a name.
In much of the country the name is the thing itself and the law recognizes the name and attaches rights to the name rather than to the thing.  My choice is the thing and the name.  Others may choose differently and many have.  Our law must make room for the facts.
This woman is suffering from nerves.  There is no tort here.

I must sleep.
