My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant
A reporter talks about his illegal American dream.
Tell me why the barriers exist.
There is a rather obvious solution to this problem.   Marriage.

American Express cardholders will receive discounts at certain shops and restaurants on their cellphone through an alliance with Foursquare.
I am not sure why this is so offensive to me.

Whitey Bulger Is Arrested in California
James (Whitey) Bulger, the legendary Boston crime boss who had eluded the authorities for 16 years was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif. by the F.B.I. on Wednesday night.
I wonder why it took so long.  I also wonder how he arranged an income.

New Online Services Offer Hope to Music Fans
New online services promise finally to bring order to the digital revolution, but dematerializing recorded music has its consequences for listeners, artists and the music industry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3   Mp3 sounds good to me.
As I read this article Jon Pareles complaints are that the collection is incomplete, he lacks the time and attention to attend to music as he would like and the reproduction quality is poor.
There is nothing I can do about the first two but the quality of reproduction I could fix.  Transducers are mostly a question of money.  Equalization is probably best adjusted after the digital to analogue conversion.

    The Breast Milk Cure
A miracle cure for childhood malnutrition is free and easily accessible, even in remote towns in Africa. Why is it rarely used?
The workings of fashion and religion are a mystery to me.
I try to study them but I have yet to gain any real insight.
It must be included in the curriculum.  Public service announcements would not go amiss.

China’s Swift Trains Are a Boon to Development, but a Costly One
Beyond controversies and cost concerns, high-speed trains are reducing hurdles posed by China’s size, bringing benefits in tow and posing challenges for the country’s competitors.
They are building a separate set of tracks to carry the high speed traffic.  There is nothing magic in high speed rail, no new developments.
The lines are better built and more carefully maintained. Freight traffic is not permitted and grade crossings are avoided.
The US system has been under deconstruction since about 1950.
On what is left of it freight has the right of way.
This situation is an active choice by congress, oil and real estate.

    The Haunting of Rick Perry
Should Gov. Rick Perry of Texas enter the 2012 presidential race, he would enjoy a strange and remarkable escort — the irrepressible ghost of Cameron Todd Willingham.

Dutch Lawmakers Adopt Net Neutrality Law
The Netherlands has become the first country in Europe to ban its mobile operators from blocking or charging consumers extra for using Internet-based services like Skype.
The Telcos billing protocol is more than a little opaque.  This reads like it will help.
    http://slashdot.org/index2.pl?fhfilter=net+neutrality
An anonymous reader writes "Big news out of the Netherlands this week, where a government minister announced plans to guarantee network neutrality by law. If Parliament approves the amendment to Dutch telecommunications law, and it expected to do so, it would become one of the first countries in the world to legislate against Internet providers who want to charge more for using particular applications or services."
tulcod writes "The Dutch government has accidentally passed an exception to a law on net neutrality, (Google translation of original in Dutch) enabling ISPs to filter internet traffic based on 'ideological motives.' The PvdA (labor party) accidentally voted for this exception to the Telecomwet (telecommunications law), which, on its own, does not allow such filtering. PvdA intends to repair their mistake."

Lytro’s Camera Lets You Shoot First and Focus Later
The company’s technology allows a picture’s focus to be adjusted after it is taken.
A very neat trick.  A small aperture optical system and a fast picture will give a very deep depth of field.  This would need no focusing.

Home Brewing - Need a Beer? Hit the Basement
Home brewing, which was rendered illegal by Prohibition and not relegalized until 1979, is enjoying a resurgence.
I had a good deal of fun reading up on brewing.
It really does require a floor drain.
I mainly learned that cleanliness is next to goodliness.
The commercial brewers do a real service.

Apple’s Final Cut Is Dead. Long Live Final Cut.
Apple substituted one Final Cut video-editing program for another, and the upgraded version covers nearly all the bases.
It is still a film program.  I have enough trouble with still photographs.
    Adding motion is very demanding.

Indiana Economy Stronger Than Others, but at a Cost
On the surface, Indiana seems to have weathered the recession rather well, but large cracks have opened in its economic foundation, a sign of just how severe the downturn remains.

A definition of madness is repeating the same action and expecting a different result.  Tax cuts and austerity have yet to increase employment.  It really is time to stop.  Mortgages without incomes are foreclosures in waiting.  Capping property taxes will not save them.
It does not read as a stronger economy.

Ai Weiwei, Dissident Chinese Artist, Is Released
Ai Weiwei’s prosecution had become a focal point of criticism of China’s rights record.
The Government of China is beginning to feel the pressure of an effective press.
