Pakistan Arrests C.I.A. Informants in Bin Laden Raid
Pakistan’s detention of five C.I.A. informants, including a Pakistani Army major, is the latest evidence of the fractured relationship between the United States and Pakistan.

Ahead of Election, Thousands in Spain Demonstrate Against Corruption

The Euro keeps looking more delicate. More rioting in Greece.
I expect the austerity vote to fail leading to a default and financial panic.
The first reaction is a market crash here.  That is doubtful.  I expect a bump from refugee money running from the chaos.

People Argue Just to Win, Scholars Assert
Rationality evolved to win arguments, some scholars suggest, and flawed reasoning is itself an adaptation.
Debate is about winning.  As an article of faith, there have been discussions that lead to new truth.  Synthesis exists though it is rare.

‘The Science of Evil’ Book Review - Six Degrees of Empathy
Simon Baron-Cohen proposes that evil can be is more scientifically defined as an absence of empathy, made worse by negative parental and societal factors, with a genetic component.
I am glad he has put up this thesis.  I think it misses but I am not equipped to argue the point.  The thesis does not run well with what I know of military training, mob formation, or prison guard behaviour.

Apple Retail Executive to Lead J.C. Penney
Ron Johnson, who oversaw the Apple Store concept, will take over as Penney’s chief executive from Myron E. Ullman III, who will become executive chairman.
I wander into Sears from time to time.  I am usually one of about ten customers in the store.  It is not a happy time for the big boxes.

Altercation Between Armstrong and Hamilton Interests F.B.I.
Federal authorities, who have been investigating the cyclist Lance Armstrong for crimes relating to doping, want to know if the encounter at an Aspen restaurant constituted witness tampering.
It does not sound like there is much in this.  Headline grabbing is an old pattern.

Same-Sex Marriage Within One Vote of Passage in Albany
ALBANY — New York is within a single vote of legalizing gay marriage after a second Republican state senator said on Tuesday that he would support the measure should it come to the floor this week.
No more news on this today.

U.S. Students Remain Poor at History, Tests Show
Only 12 percent of high school seniors demonstrated proficiency in American history in a nationwide test.
That sounds like failure to me.

‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ Opens After Changes - Review
The mega-expensive musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” is no longer the ungodly, indecipherable mess it was in February. It’s just a bore.

El Bulli is Closing, but Spain Looks Forward
