F.B.I. Giving Agents New Powers in Revised Manual
The F.B.I. plans to issue a new edition of its manual giving agents more leeway to search databases, go through household trash or use surveillance teams to scrutinize people.

Obama Reaches Out to Wall Street Donors
President Obama has started an aggressive push to win back the allegiance of a vital source of campaign cash in 2008.
They are vital and they know it.

    Saudi Arabia’s Freedom Riders
If Muslim women could ride on camels 14 centuries ago, why shouldn’t they drive cars today?
When women are liberated in Arabia it will be revolutionary.
The regime is not under strain as far as I can tell.

Hashtags, a New Way for Tweets: Cultural Studies
Hashtags, words or phrases preceded by the “#” symbol, have become a new cultural shorthand.
This is fashion speaking.  Just say what you intend. There will be less confusion.

Why Women Don't Get Caught Up in Sex Scandals
Why don’t women politicians get caught cheating? The whole approach to seeking and wielding power is different.
“The shorthand of it is that women run for office to do something, and men run for office to be somebody,” said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. “Women run because there is some public issue that they care about, some change they want to make, some issue that is a priority for them, and men tend to run for office because they see this as a career path.”
    A distinction without a difference.

Anthony Weiner and the Game of Twitter

If he was skilled he knew his construct was horribly and increasingly unstable. Jenga is a fun party game but it is not a career model.

    The Whistle-Blowers of 1777
The tension between protecting true national security secrets and ensuring the public’s “right to know” about abuses of authority goes back to the time of America’s founding.
I am in agreement that there should be no legal protection for secrets.
Secrecy is the protection of that information.  If those who hold the information do not believe it should be secret it will not be secret.
There should be no duty of self incrimination.  A person in possession of information is not required to speak.

The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy “shadow” Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments.

    The Uncertainty Tax
A few big, smart, bipartisan decisions by Congress on taxes and spending (and mortgages) could get the economy to start improving again.
    Thomas Friedman knows better.
There will be no changes in taxes, no bipartisan decisions and no relief for debtors while the Republicans can block them.  Maybe while there is not a liberal super-majority.

Book Review - The Filter Bubble - By Eli Pariser
A progressive political activist asks whether the personalization of search-engine results is a blessing or a curse.
If I can't find what I am looking for on the first few pages I will change my search terms or my search engine or both.  Filtering is not what I want.
