@22:10, 05/14/11

I will sleep.

The extreme right in this country is taking their view from Ayn Rand.
Not from Atlas Shrugged but from The Fountainhead. They see taxation as morally repugnant altruism.
The social programs we have in place are not altruistic.  They pay for things that improve the life of the community to the direct benefit of the taxpayer.
Food riots and revolts against elites are not healthy.  Endemic cholera and measles and consumption are also not healthy. Poisonings and untreated stds we will do better without.  Flood control seems a great idea. Weather forecasts and telecommunications that work look good as do the common defence and law enforcement.  Safe highways and railways likewise.  Even collective bargaining is a good idea if some other ox is gored.  Reasonable compensation really does work better.  Henry Ford figured that out.  He forgot to compensate for inflation.  A quarter ounce of gold a day does seem like good pay. $20 gold.

As with other pop stars, I will put a poster on the wall and own the CD.  When the price is less than five percent of my net worth I will consider keeping one.
I would never allow the chauffeur to use it.  She can run the electrics.
The MP3 will play in the sound system.  Making it interactive with the controls might be fun.

Companies continue to press for higher premiums, saying they need protection against any sudden uptick in demand once people have more money to spend on their health.

      What Holbrooke Knew
      “What Holbrooke Knew - http://nyti.ms/lQP29z”
We have two problems in south Asia.
The Christian Right in this country and Islam there.
Secular government is anathema to both.
Peace without dominance is forbidden in that world view.
Diplomacy must rule the day.  It does not as yet.
We are more likely to win here than there.
Perhaps if we can control the rabid Christians here we can find a way to surrender their territory to the Muslims so they believe it.
I would like to see secular education for all be part of that deal.

I wish that she did not indulge herself with the fiction of a discontinuity of the effective government of Egypt.  The military has been in control since the king was sent packing and probably before that.  Changing the face on the Junta does not change the Junta.

      Tools for Thinking
      “Tools for Thinking - http://nyti.ms/gKHJ60”
I deeply distrust David Brooks.  He argues to win every time.
"This effect is especially powerful in foreign affairs, where each new conflict is viewed through the prism of Vietnam or Munich or the cold war or Iraq."      Attributing characteristics to others found in himself.

“Education is an important determinant of income — one of the most important — but it is less important than most people think. If everyone had the same education, the inequality of income would be reduced by less than 10 percent. When you focus on education you neglect the myriad of other factors that determine income. The differences of income among people who have the same education are huge.”    Path dependence not the focusing error.
"The humanities can be informed by the cognitive sciences even as they supervene them." And are supervened by the sciences.
Faith based and observation based is the split. The humanities must include the sciences.  Engineering of physical systems may not be included.

I do not yet have control of my funds at TIAA_CREF.
They do better than most brain dead programs.
Aside from that I own individual stocks.
I am very nervous.  The dollar I am told is in no real danger if congress behaves.  If it does not there may be a great buying opportunity.
I think I should up my cash balance.   Monday in the afternoon I will talk with my broker.
