Outlook is Bleak Even for Recent College Graduates
Employment rates for new graduates have fallen sharply, as have starting salaries for those who can find work.

The legend is that we boomers don't want the competition.
I do not find that to be a fact.
Those of us that are working would like help.
The money that employs us wants cheap.
Cheap has been China, Indonesia, India and Pakistan.
Experiments with Africa are under way.
The recent grads are not desperate enough.
These kids should not be doing labour.  They should put their heads together and do something productive.  Write, report, investigate, trade, preach or reason.
Student debt is the whip that directs their efforts to the remunerative.
A big stimulus would be to relieve them of that debt.
    It worked beautifully in 1950.

Europe’s New Approach to Biotech Food
“Europe’s New Approach to Biotech Food - http://nyti.ms/aZw3Dk”
I am left unsure as to what the policy is.
It would make good sense to de-legitimize the patent protections on these crops and let nature take its course.
We seem to have lots of bad food in the pursuit of profits.
Why are these seeds any different?
If one can't taste the difference and it is no more poisonous than other varieties why would anyone worry?
If the patent does not yield a payment the seed companies will be most anxious not to sell there.

This Is Your Brain on Twitter
“This Is Your Brain on Twitter - http://nyti.ms/ky1ccq”

      Bill Keller has found something.
That I think he does not understand it does not mean that I do.
The ability to place a thought or an observation easily expressed in 140 characters in a context of experience so it extends or details the intellectual structure depends on the internal existence of such a structure.  Its presence in mechanical form is unavailable to any person.

Agatha Cristie knew what Miss Marple knows.  Our a-literate population does not know though they can easily discover what that means.

My point is that Twitter will not easily stock a memory.
Failure to stock one's memory leads to a failure to think.
The simile was made of calculator dependence.
The calculator makes numbers very easy.  The right answer pops right up. Attention to the actual number and how they operate on one another is a great comfort when facing finance.  Thirty years later I can do compound interest.  Debt is very frightening.

Even following very smart people will not let you see where they will lead next.
      Surprise can cloy in time.

Lawmakers and Others Discuss Changes to Education Programs for Prisoners
“Lawmakers and Others Discuss Changes to Education Programs for Prisoners - http://nyti.ms/jxjwYb rehabilitation without education?”

The article starts by denying reality:
"As state lawmakers combed the budget this year for cuts to close a multibillion-dollar shortfall . . ."  The state has the power to tax.
Any reduction in prison education would be very counter productive.
If the prisoners are coming out they must be able to join the world outside those walls.  They should understand the necessity for law and the reasoning of judges.  They should be able to read write and figure.
The days when a Bible was enough are long gone.  If they can find the joy in reading the walls will not limit their minds.
They will be more reluctant to return to the "home" some find there.

      They do, of course.
In this case they have a mentor to see they get the material.
With motivated kids I can think of no better way to educate.
