How Green Is Your Real (or Fake) Christmas Tree?
Thinking they are helping the environment, Americans continue to buy millions of fake Christmas trees. But a new study makes a surprisingly strong case in favor of natural trees.
I find no joy in arborcide or in liver cancer.  I prune the holly trees by the front door in late December and compose a Yule ornament from the pruned branches. The trees are some forty feet high at this point and seem to benefit from judicious pruning. The result is quite temporary but looks good for the holiday and keeps the branches off the roof.

Is Going to an Elite College Worth the Cost?
The sluggish economy and rising costs of college have only intensified questions about whether expensive, prestigious colleges make any difference.
This seems to say that an elite school is poor economics and good psychology.  Another case of fashion.

Films of ’62: When Eras Collided
Culture on the brink: Peter O’Toole, far left, with Omar Sharif in David Lean’s “Lawrence of Arabia.”  This was recut a decade ago.
I have not seen the new version.  I am not a good movie fan.

Pakistani Role Is Suspected in Revealing U.S. Spy’s Name
The C.I.A. station chief in Islamabad left after his identity was exposed. Some American officials suspect that Pakistan’s military intelligence agency deliberately blew his cover.
We are being played by all the other parties to this mess.

Newly Built Ghost Towns Haunt Banks in Spain
Spain has done this before.  It is time for the bank examiners.  The bankruptcy laws must change.  The crown is going to have some new lands.
Usually a ghost town had a reason like a mine or a forest.
