Ai Weiwei Takes Role of China’s Conscience
Ai Weiwei, taken into custody on Sunday, is both a fully 21st-century figure and the embodiment of an ancient cultural type.

I will make no effort to halt the ravening mob.
I have plans not to join it.
I will help people to remember.
