Are Research Papers a Waste of Time? - Room for Debate
Has the Internet made research papers a useless exercise for college students? Is there a better way to assess knowledge?
Actions will assess knowledge every time.    Research papers are useful tools to drive understanding.

Mass Evacuations for Hurricane Irene, and More to Come - Room for Debate
Remember the evacuation gridlock in Houston before Hurricane Rita? That's just the beginning.
Why bother?  Politically we must make the effort but the gesture will be the action.  Saving people from their foolishness can only be an attempt in a free society.
We must concentrate on saving people from others' foolishness.

Hurricane Irene's Hidden Costs, Still Piling Up - Room for Debate
Our population’s relentless march to the coast is putting more people and their built environment in harm’s way.
    "Just say no."
Coastal development must stop.  That area is now committed to destruction by submergence.
Palliative care is all that we can give it.
Federal flood insurance in the coastal zone must buy the properties as the buildings are destroyed.
Zoning must prevent further development other than public recreation.

The 'Cry Wolf' Effect After Hurricane Irene - Room for Debate
Everyone working in emergency preparedness need to counter the complacency that will surely arise after the hurricane.

"We can do this by continuing to insist that all citizens have an emergency preparedness plan and by providing adequate resources to assist in this process. If we do not remain vigilant, we run the risk of losing more lives to future hurricanes."
    Useless effort.
People only seem learn when other people they care about die.
New York City cannot be protected or moved.  We will just have to try to clean up the mess after the event.

What Did We Learn From Irene? - Room for Debate
Most residents of New York City's flood-prone areas defied evacuation orders. Were they prepared anyway?
"New York City's residents learned that “transit is the economic life, the cultural life of the city,” as summed up by Mitchell Moss, director of the Rudin Center at New York University. The M.T.A.'s subway trains and buses are parked in areas prone to flooding, a problem long recognized by task forces on climate change and by emergency planners, but apparently not yet solved. Yellow cabs came to the rescue of some evacuees in Lower Manhattan.
But most residents who were ordered to evacuate from low-lying areas like Battery Park City and the Rockaways did not comply with the order to leave. It could turn out that New York had a worse evacuation record than New Orleans did before Katrina, whose sixth anniversary was this week."
    Not much was learned.
Mayor Bloomberg likes to do his job.

H.P. Plans to Make a Few More TouchPads

Hewlett-Packard TouchPadNoah Berger/Bloomberg News Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad tablet did not sell well until it was discounted.
    6:48 p.m. | Updated Adding pricing information.
Hewlett-Packard says its tablet liquidation sale was such a hit that it is making some more tablets to liquidate.
The tablet, the TouchPad, is getting a brief reprieve from its death sentence. H.P. said on Tuesday that it swas planning to produce one last run of its would-be iPad competitor.
Consumers shunned the TouchPad when it was introduced two months ago, and H.P. quickly said it would stop production as part of a broader overhaul. But the remaining tablets went quickly after their price was discounted 80 percent. So many people wanted them, in fact, that H.P. could not fill all the orders.
“Since we announced the price drop, the number of inquiries about the product and the speed at which it disappeared from inventory has been stunning,” H.P. said in a blog post. “I think it’s safe to say we were pleasantly surprised by the response.” Read more…
