Learning to Do Research Is a Lifelong Skill - Room for Debate
Learning to inquire and think critically are important for research papers, essays, presentations and blog entries.
"The research process, even if it evolves into writing projects of a different type, is still important."

Research Papers: Knowledge and the Individual - Room for Debate
If students abandon the research paper, they will miss the only discipline that can reveal to them the accuracy and integrity of their own thoughts.
All the evidence of the world is not in the library. The student must learn to look at the evidence.
The research paper is a way to begin.

How Visa, Using Card Fees, Dominates a Market
A simple, free market solution to credit card fee gouging would be to allow merchants to charge lower prices if a customer pays in cash. That way a CUSTOMER can make the choice about whether they want to pay for for the convenience of credit or debit cards. Visa and Mastercard's refusal to allow merchants to set lower prices for cash payments is tantamount to price fixing.

Visa is not the only credit company.  The merchant can refuse Visa.

Mass Evacuations for Hurricane Irene, and More to Come - Room for Debate
Remember the evacuation gridlock in Houston before Hurricane Rita? That's just the beginning.
"There is always a bigger wave." is a truism in marine design.  It holds for storm preparation.

The Problem With Shortcuts in Research - Room for Debate
Digital tools offer too many conveniences and well-digested materials for students to use them in meaningful formative ways.
I see no reason to suffer beyond understanding the evidence in its context.
It is a paper, not a scholarly book.
The student is learning the subject rather than inventing it.
    Plagiarized work is not acceptable.

Research Papers Need Argument and Evidence - Room for Debate
Any good research paper must have an argument, and any good essay must support its argument with evidence.

An essay may be pure personal opinion and make no reference to the broader world.  No evidence required.
I agree that a research paper must make use of the evidence supporting the argument.  The net can find the evidence, the mind must understand it.
