For Farmers Without Land, a Long Island Lawn Will Do

A couple is trying to grow a business by cultivating crops on land that homeowners usually mow.

I want to live among gardens.
I have little desire to be a gardener.
It is clear to me that social contact is important.
I am not prepared to be a hermit.

Readers Disagree on How Quiet to Be While Watching ‘Game of Thrones’

Some say any peep from a companion watching the hit HBO show would ruin everything. Others are more accommodating. And some just have to talk.

There is an extensive fan culture and literature for Game of Thrones and its source, The Song of Ice and Fire novels.
I want to concentrate for a first experience of the drama.
Later I will read the recaps and the commentaries and continuities.
Then I will join an audience and treat it like The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I don't know how to share the experience of immersion in real time.
Critical examination is a different pleasure and better when shared.  It is further improved when the sources are immediately available for review and examination as with a book or DVD.

I want the salad with the intended dressing.
I can try the components later or another day.
The art is the composed dish.

Silent, no, quiet companionship for the first viewing.
It is a drama and art.

I Was Abused as a Child. How Do I Deal With This as a Parent?

The lesson to unlearn: a family refusal to talk about all the most important stuff. Please discuss, though it will feel uncomfortable at first.

"CS: That’s the lesson to unlearn here: the one in which your family refused to talk to you about all the most important stuff. Please, Mom, discuss this with your daughter! It’ll probably feel uncomfortable at first, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you don’t repeat a negative pattern of silence and denial. Teach your daughter instead that we have the capacity to talk about the hardest things. You’re right that she’s thinking about this, and you’re also right that it’s time for her to know the truth. With you as her guide, she’s strong enough to handle it.
SA: What Cheryl’s getting at here is crucial. Trust yourself to be able to talk with your daughter about these experiences. But also trust her. You have to trust that underneath her emotional riot is a kid willing, and probably eager, to listen, one who needs to know that you understand her most dire feelings and can handle them. When parents offer true emotional honesty, kids show up.
CS: Even though my kids were younger than your daughter is now, Mom, when I told them about my experiences with my father, they listened. They understood. And they also understood when I told them a few years later that I’d been sexually abused as a kid. These conversations haven’t ended. They’ve evolved over time, as my children grow up and have a deeper capacity to comprehend more complex facts of our human existence. They’re essential conversations for all of us to have, at any age. Have them with your daughter.
Now.
I know you can."

I was not abused so much as misunderstood.
Children shape themselves.
We can help them.
We cannot force them successfully.
The arts are full of children trying to grow around early training.
Perhaps the world is full of intentionally crippled children.

The Faces of New York City’s Pride Parade

“The point was to represent a group of people who were in the same place while an event was happening and show the diversity that exists within that group,” said Ryan Pfluger, a photographer who took portraits of paradegoers in Washington Square Park.

David Mamet Doesn’t Want to Hear From You. Do Other Playwrights?

Tedious or contentious, the post-show discussion has become part of the theater landscape. Given a choice, would other writers issue a gag order?

Economy Needs Workers, but Drug Tests Take a Toll

Employers say they are having trouble filling jobs because too many applicants can’t pass screening, a factor depressing the labor participation rate.

Retest the failing applicants in three weeks.
Hope will allow some of them to get clean and stay clean.
Some will be able to do the job and keep their habits.
Being unfit for duty is the problem.
