Four Nerds and a Cry to Arms Against Facebook
I love the altruistic fervor but once these nerds get a taste of a corporate jet, ultra-lux hotels in exotic locales, they will soon find themselves questioning their lofty ideals.

For Farmers: Hand vs. Machine - Room for Debate
Agricultural history shows that the demand for labor is more flexible than supply, and as labor costs rise, farmers switch to labor-saving machines.
All costs must be paid.  The cost of the machine is still greater than the cost of the labor.

Why Not Offer Internships Instead? - Room for Debate
Extending the school day is the easy part; ensuring that the extra time adds value is the hard part.
The value is child free time for the parents.
Keeping the children amused and learning is easy but costly.

Does IMF Stand for Impressive Macroeconomic Flexibility?
So the IMF is holding a meeting on rethinking macroeconomic policy (I was invited but couldn’t make the timing work.) And the Fund’s chief economist has already made it clear that he’s open to some serious revision of the prevailing paradigm.

Krugman is attending a conference in Iceland.

Europe is conferring desperately.  They will have to say something tomorrow.

Is The Euro Summit Already A Failure Following An Early EcoFin Meeting Cancellation?

Eurozone Poland The European farce descends into surrealism and gortesque tragicomedy. Just out of the FT's Brussels Blog which discussed what appears to be an early cancellation of the critical EcoFin (not to be confused with Euro Coffin) meeting: "A letter sent last night by Jacek Rostowski, the Polish finance minister, makes an [EcoFin meeting doubtful]. Since Poland currently holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, Rostowski is charged with convening a meeting of all 27 EU finance ministers tomorrow ahead of the big summit to lay the groundwork for a final agreement. But officials tell Brussels Blog the so-called “Ecofin” council meeting is now likely off, and in a letter to Jean-Claude Juncker, the Luxembourg prime minister who chairs the group of 17 eurozone finance ministers, Rostowski makes it appear the cancellation is due to a failure to agree on outstanding issues." No.... they couldn't agree??? Nobody could have possibly foreseen this. Nobody.

Do States Need Schools for the Deaf? - Room for Debate
A clash over whether children should be encouraged to sign, at a separate school for the deaf, or should attend 'mainstream' schools.
Establish "free" boarding schools for the deaf.  They will be a refuge.
The deaf do not socialize in a hearing environment.

The new one is the old one.  Callista looks to have earned him.

How 10 Billion Can Survive - Room for Debate
Ten billion people with post-industrial world consumption habits would overwhelm resource supplies and waste streams.
"A 10 billion-human planet worth living on is possible – but only if we think ahead."
    Fond hope.
