Will Amazon Kill Off Book Publishers? - Room for Debate
What happens when more writers have the option of a one-stop shop: agent, publisher and bookseller.
The same thing as has been happening for many years.
The artist is as always the writer.  Editing for length is the publisher.
Editing for clarity is a failure of the writer.  Spelling is very automated.
There will be a great many more texts made available because the selection is moved from the publisher to the reader.
The rules for copyright will have to change because so much will be published.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright

A Vision Beyond Rebuilding - Room for Debate
Demolishing vacant foreclosed properties is a good first step, but it must be part of a larger strategy.

Destroying Houses to Save Cities - Room for Debate
Are banks helping or hurting a community by bulldozing foreclosed property?
Lets take these one by each.

"- Develop and disseminate the criteria for demolition.
We have that.  The bank or other owner cannot extract the cost of carrying.
-- Engage the community in decision-making.
The community does not get a look in.  Accounting makes the decision.
The decision point was when the loan went into default or the owner walked away.  That was a community decision.
-- Develop a citywide approach using a data-driven analysis of neighborhood conditions.
There is really no way to force people from their homes but eminent domain, tax sale, or foreclosure.
-- Engage all public land owners in a policy vision and alignment of resources.
I suppose a city could exercise eminent domain to clear the last few holdouts from an area.  It will not make them happy.
-- Deploy more resources to rehabilitation, material recycling, land maintenance and stewardship.
These areas are brown fields.  Super Fund money should be applied.
-- Adopt flexible and entrepreneurial zoning codes for creative interim and long-term uses."
All zoning codes limit the possible use of areas.  It is what they are for.
These lots are given to "land banks"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_banking
Governments do not recognize zero or negative values for property.
Taxes would consume any for profit entity as this land will not redevelop. A zoning code could recognize this problem.
The property could return to the tax rolls when value returns to the property.  Cities have no choice but to provide police and fire protection.  For these properties it need not be expensive.

Single-Sex Schools: Separate but Equal? - Room for Debate
A new study debunks the benefits of segregation by sex in the classroom, and says the practice does more harm than good. Should it be illegal?
It is illegal in institutions that receive federal money.
Brown V. Board threw out the concept of separate but equal.
    Title IX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IX )
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
"Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was originally written in order to end discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, the act tremendously helped to energize the women’s rights movement which had somewhat slowed after women’s suffrage in 1920.[2] On the same token, while Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports.[3]"
"On November 24, 2006, the Title IX regulations were amended to provide greater flexibility in the operation of single-sex classes or extracurricular activities at the primary or secondary school level.[13]"
They should not have done that.

If they could sell it they would.  Amputation is a last resort.

    I can do that.
I will try it with green beans.
I have not started on the cauliflower yet.

Good Policy and Politics for Homeowners - Room for Debate
The new rules are good for the economy, good for the neighborhood and good for job growth.
This program is not for those who are not current.
It offers relief only for those who owe more than the house is worth
but are paying.  I do not expect to see much of a bump from it.
