Will Amazon Kill Off Book Publishers? - Room for Debate
What happens when more writers have the option of a one-stop shop: agent, publisher and bookseller.
It will make them very uncomfortable.  The costs of publication have dropped precipitously.  Paper publication will be very limited.

Monopoly vs. Diversity in Book Publishing - Room for Debate
Publishing isn’t about developing algorithms. It’s been about art-making and speaking truth to power.
The art in publications is in the text.  The printing and cover are a frame but they are information too.   Agents and publishers add very little value to an eBook.

Amazon Enters Publishing: There's No Going Back - Room for Debate
Writers are increasingly taking on a mind-set like app developers in that they will align with the big platforms, be it Kindle or the Apple Store.
It will get more writers contracts.  The only way a paper only publisher will be able to retain a writer will be to place them under contract.
Negotiating those contracts will be the task of the the agents.

The Case Against Law School - Room for Debate
Should the standard three-year law school model, followed by passage of the bar exam, be the only path to a legal career?
A profession can set its own rules for entry.  Should does not apply.

Amazon did what any successful business tries to do: it looked for opportunities to grow by offering different services than its competitors.

Bucking the Trend at Women's Colleges - Room for Debate
Cultural forces lead many young women to believe that there are some fields of study that just aren’t for them.
Belief has much to do with learning.
One reason early childhood is critical to learning is it is then that belief structures are instilled.  Once established belief structures are self reinforcing.

Single-Sex Schools: Separate but Equal? - Room for Debate
A new study debunks the benefits of segregation by sex in the classroom, and says the practice does more harm than good. Should it be illegal?
"The preponderance of scientific evidence indicates that single-sex education fails to produce academic benefits and inflates gender stereotyping."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IX
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
    —United States Code Section 20,
"Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was originally written in order to end discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, the act tremendously helped to energize the women’s rights movement which had somewhat slowed after women’s suffrage in 1920.[2] On the same token, while Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports."

      Come Again, Republicans?
Republicans, who claim to be worried about the deficit, are suddenly determined to overturn one of health care reform’s central cost-control mechanisms.

      http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/25/very-serious-americans/
"Digby finds Paul Ryan, winner of an award for fiscal responsibility, saying, well, something:
RYAN: Let’s review for a moment the path we are on, where we stand right now. It pains me to say this, but it’s become clear that the president has committed us to the current path: higher taxes, more dependency, more bureaucratic control, inaction on the drivers of our debt — just not even dealing with it — and painful austerity, the kind you see in Europe.
So unless Obama agrees to sharp spending cuts, we’ll be forced into austerity? What?
Wait, it’s worse: just the other day, Ryan and colleagues were praising European-style austerity; they bought into the “expansionary austerity” thesis just as it was collapsing intellectually.
On a somewhat related note, John Quiggin reads the original Alesina/Ardagna paper on expansionary austerity, and finds that they got all the facts about Australia wrong. Most notably, they depict a decline in spending on unemployment benefits that was the result of an economic expansion as an expansionary spending cut. Geez."
