A Taste of Summer

It’s not here yet, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t roast some chicken parts, painted with homemade barbecue sauce, and enjoy with a simple slaw.

I will do something.

Become a Disciple of Duck Wings

Rich and gamy, these have found their way onto restaurant menus and can be made easily at home.

I don't mind if I do.

Is It O.K. to Engineer the Environment to Fight Climate Change?

Scientists are investigating whether releasing tons of particulates into the atmosphere might be good for the planet. Not everyone thinks this is a good idea.

Do the analysis.
Some active measure must be taken.
If action is not begun soon about half the population of the earth will die young.
Much of that dying will be done by the children.

Patrolling the Border on Four Legs

The Times tagged along for a shift of Border Patrol agents on horseback, who play an essential role in efforts to detect illegal activity near hard-to-patrol areas along the Rio Grande.

Texas loves the cavalry and hunting hostiles.
The border has become a game.

It is not yet a blood sport.

Georgia Didn’t Affirm Trump

There was no victor — and no clear lesson — in Tuesday’s special election.

There will be a runoff.
The Republicans will be less divided.

You’re Too Busy. You Need a ‘Shultz Hour.’

The former secretary of state, now 96, has some wisdom for our smartphone-addled world.

Time without the external connection is essential.
One hour a week is not enough.

A Witness’s Account of a Bronx Killing Might Have Helped, if It Hadn’t Vanished

When the police knocked on doors after a Bronx killing, one woman identified the gunman. So why did her account never make it to the defense?

"During the appeals, when lawyers for Mr. Odiase mentioned the new evidence, Mr. Oustatcher said they could have found the witness if they had made the effort before the trial. Notably, he did not defend himself by saying that he already given them the full document.
Mr. Oustatcher was asked to join the review, said Patrice O’Shaughnessy, a spokeswoman for the district attorney. “He declined unless they compensated him,” she said.
Prosecutors in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx are now routinely reviewing possible wrongful convictions on a case-by-case basis. That is not enough to tell us what goes wrong. Did detectives look for the man identified by the witness? How do prosecutors comply with their duty to provide information to the defense while not exposing witnesses to danger? What are the incentives for the institutions?
Blaming one person may feel good. But it doesn’t do much."

The prosecution must get it right the first time.

Trillions of Plastic Bits, Swept Up by Current, Are Littering Arctic Waters

A new study found that a major ocean current is carrying plastic from the North Atlantic to the Greenland and Barents seas, and leaving it there.

Humanity will not stop the plastic at the source.

A effort must be made to collect it where it concentrates.

Trump and AIDS Relief

The Health Global Access Program writes that Congress is best advised to ignore President Trump’s cruel prescription.

Donald Trump is attempting to execute the platform that elected him.
I can only hope he is prevented.
That does not appear likely in the longer term.

This Is a Giant Shipworm. You May Wish It Had Stayed In Its Tube.

It’s actually a clam, it lives on sulfur and researchers have studied a living specimen for the first time.

It is life.
All life is interesting.
