Homes for Sale in Brooklyn and Manhattan

This week’s properties are in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and in Manhattan’s Kips Bay and Upper West Side neighborhoods.

A studio space is liable to be loud, smelly and perceived as a fire danger.
It is also likely to be unremunerative.

7 New York City Schools Will Reserve Slots for Disadvantaged Students

In an effort to curb segregation, the Education Department said it would allow seven elementary schools to reserve some slots for children from low-income or non-English speaking families.

I wonder how they plan to bias the lottery.
A method that occurs to me is picking students from the applicant pool.
Each student has biasing information attached to their identifier.
Quotas are filled after students are randomly selected.
If a quota is filled the potential student is rejected.
Selection continues until all quotas are filled.
A large group has more than one biasing quality.
They can be placed in an available quota.
All applicants are the children of motivated parents.

The move would have shifted some families from the zone of a highly sought after elementary school to that of a school that was labeled persistently dangerous.

Settlement in New York Domestic Violence Case May Set Broader Precedent

Bon-Ton put an employee threatened by her husband on leave. In a settlement, it agreed to change its policy to allow such employees to stay on the job.

"In a possible violation of the law, the Bon-Ton employee was sent home by a manager shortly after revealing that her estranged husband had threatened her life the day before. Under the terms of the settlement, Bon-Ton did not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to change its policy so that employees in a similar situation are not required to procure a protective order to stay on the job."
