Cooking With the Door Open

This week’s subjects include odors from the apartment next door; problems with the heat; and rules in middle-income developments.

"Many — although not all — middle-income developments do not require a household to certify income and household composition once the tenant moves in. If you qualified at the time you were offered a lease, your future salary increases could very well be irrelevant, said Jeanne-Marie Williams, a Manhattan lawyer who represents tenants."

I do not want to live in the city.
I happily rusticate.
I do it for the spaces.

Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter made a subtle jab at China on Thursday by flying onto an American aircraft carrier in the contested waters of the South China Sea.

I Am Paying for Your Expensive Medicine

We need to evaluate whether new drugs are really worthwhile, because the costs are widely, although perhaps invisibly, shared.

The price of medication must be questioned.
This is the wrong view of insurance.
The market for these high priced medications is limited.
If it were larger a generic would solve the problem.
As things stand the price is protected by the low volume of sales and the cost of setting up production.
India and China would make the drugs if they could profit.

Georgia: Ex-Deputy Gets One Month in Jail Death

A former sheriff’s deputy convicted of using a Taser to shock a restrained detainee who later died was sentenced to a month behind bars.

The death and the resolution are unsatisfactory.

I don't know how to change the culture of Georgia without applying force.

Lawsuit Challenges N.C.A.A. Transfer Rules

A football player who lost his scholarship says rules requiring players to sit out a year if they switch colleges violate antitrust law.

I doubt Devin Pugh will prevail.
To do so he would demonstrate payments for playing.

Brick makes good fireplaces but poor walls.

The Dying of the Whites

What white mortality rates tell us about the crisis of the working class.

Ross Douthat would blame everything on failures of faith.
Opioids are a factor.  They are addictive and prescribed.
The disaster of low wages is another factor.
Labor is losing their houses with their jobs.
Alcohol is not a novelty.
A politics of personal responsibility and guilt
It is more stress added to stress of long standing.

It would be better to cure H.I.V.
We can't yet do that.
Genoya and the others are a next step toward maintenance.

The Fallacy of the Latest Contraception Case

In a secular society, religious freedom demands respect and accommodation, not veto power over government actions.

I agree.
There is another approach.
Birth control is provided on demand without involving the employers.
