Obamacare Not as Egalitarian as It Appears

The health law has been a success in several respects but is also a reminder that reducing inequality is a formidable challenge.

N.F.L. Week 9 Previews and Picks

The undefeated Carolina Panthers will try to pick up a signature win against the Green Bay Packers.

"Redskins (3-4) at Patriots (7-0)
1 p.m. Line: Patriots by 14
It is possible to talk yourself into thinking the Redskins can upset the Patriots on the road this weekend. The Patriots’ offensive line is in shambles, after all, and the Redskins seem like one of those teams that can beat any team or lose to any team from week to week. But Washington cannot seem to stop the run and its secondary might be just as injury-riddled, if not more so, than New England’s offensive line. Plus, it has to deal with Tom Brady.
PICK: PATRIOTS"

Is the Economy Overheating? Here’s Why It’s So Hard to Say

Wage growth seems to be increasing, a sign of a labor market at full capacity — with inflation likely to follow. But there is more to the story.

Justin Wolfers is wrong in detail.
There should be no rise in interest rates until inflation rises well above 2%.

Hike They Shouldn’t

Does today’s good job report mean that the Fed will raise rates next month? Probably yes. Does it mean that the Fed should raise rates? Definitely not. The arguments against an early rate rise remain compelling, and shouldn’t be abandoned based on one month’s data.
First of all, some perspective: while wage growth has picked up, it’s still well below pre crisis levels; core inflation is also still below the Fed’s target. And here’s the thing: there’s very good reason to believe that the pre-crisis target was too low. The Fed used to think that 2 percent inflation was high enough to make the chances of hitting the zero lower bound on interest rates trivial; we now know that this was utterly wrong. So the Fed should not be eager to raise rates until inflation and wage growth are at least at, and preferably above, where they were before the bottom fell out. And it certainly shouldn’t be conveying the impression that 2 percent is not a target but a ceiling, which is exactly what it would do with a rate hike.
Beyond that, although related, is the asymmetry of risks. Yes, US job growth is OK right now. But the world economy as a whole is struggling, and we tend to import that weakness via a strong dollar; also, there are plenty of other things that can go wrong. Maybe they won’t, and inflation accelerates a bit. If so, the Fed knows what to do. But if the economy weakens, the Fed doesn’t have adequate ammunition. So uncertainty says wait.
I guess we’ll be talking about this at the IMF later today. I wish I thought we’d get traction."

There is probably racism involved in the case.
I do not know how.
The four officers involved behaved questionably.
I want to know why shots were fired.

Should You Treat Muscle Pain With Ice or Heat?

Cold therapy is usually recommended in the immediate aftermath of an acute injury, but both heat and cold may help with lingering muscle pain.

"A new comparison, published this year in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, looked at muscle damage and pain in 100 people of comparable fitness. Half received either cold or heat treatment after 15 minutes of leg squats and half received no treatment. The researchers concluded that both heat and cold appeared to be effective in reducing muscle damage, but cold used immediately after exercise or 24 hours later was superior in reducing pain."

Gary Danielson of CBS on L.S.U.-Alabama and Going Pro Early

The commentator, who will be at Saturday night’s game in Tuscaloosa, spoke about the rise of the Tigers’ and the Crimson Tide’s conference and rivalry.

"Q. Should some of those players have been in the N.F.L. already?
A. That is the one thing that separates the sport that I cover from any other sport — it’s the fact that because of the unique rules that our best athletes cannot turn pro. It’s the only sport like that. They have to stay in college, and these games get distorted by the Patrick Petersons, Amari Coopers and Percy Harvins that could have and should have been playing in the N.F.L.
Q. Is that fair to the players?
A. No, absolutely not. I’ve been doing this for 25 years. College basketball is surviving. Selfishly, it’s not the way it was, I get that, but everyone’s fine. I think it’s very unfair for these players who are good enough. College football could survive."

If the player's goal is education they would not be tempted by the N.F.L.

Pay the players.
