Sarah Polley: The Men You Meet Making Movies

I loved acting. But I didn’t realize what it was to be taken seriously until I began directing.

I am not going to deal with Harvey Weinstein.

Misogyny is not acceptable.
"Just say no" trivializes real problems.
Guessing by the leadership does not help.

The ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ Showrunners on ‘Redefining the Story of Losers’

“It’s millions of people in obscurity who did most of the heavy lifting, only to have somebody step in and get the credit,” says series co-creator Christopher C. Rogers.

It's a good reason to misuse a shotgun.

Technological development is not interesting to those not involved in the projects.

The variety and detail of human relations is always the core of story.

"Halt and catch fire" Would be interesting as a cautionary tale.  It is not one.

Surf and Safari: Packages Offer Two Hotels, Two Experiences

Properties are giving guests different destinations in one trip — including jungle and beach in Belize, city and country in New York.

There is never enough time.

I would not design such trips.
My goal would be synergy.

Why Are Millennials Wary of Freedom?

Because they’ve been taught to fear life.

"Who will bell the cat?"

To fix the problems of fear a further large fraction of the active electorate must be convinced to act against their short term interest.
Pain is building in that part of the population but it is not yet enough to force a change in behavior.
The change must be a desirable one.
Such changes became ragged at the end of the
Second World War.

Becoming a Steelworker Liberated Her. Then Her Job Moved to Mexico.

Workers like Shannon Mulcahy took pride in their jobs at the Rexnord factory in Indianapolis. The bearings they made were top-notch. In the end, it didn’t matter.

I have no fix for manufacturing labor.
Automation will aid production.
Quality control in purchasing can force quality control in manufacturing as it has in the past.

Communities will change or die.
Community death is ugly.

A Courtship Started Under the Midnight Sun

Dena Perri Adler and Colin Stone Peacock are to be married Oct. 15 at the Onteora Mountain House, a bed-and-breakfast in the Catskill Mountains.

Sooner is better.     As soon as you can is best.

‘Women Didn’t Want It Then and Women Don’t Want It Now’

Our top 10 comments of the week: Readers respond to more women speaking out against Harvey Weinstein, the California fires and Eminem’s latest.

Politicians should act in the best interests of the whole.
I would be happier if they did.

You Say Cohen. I Say Kohn. Let’s (Not) Call the Whole Thing Off!

The couple met in New York through a mutual friend, but she was hesitant, and, on their first date, more complications ensued.

Sooner is better.     As soon as you can is best.

Tradition of Helping Neediest Cases Inspires Readers to Give Back

Donors to the fund, now in its 106th year, have followed in the footsteps of loved ones and mentors, and have also been motivated to contribute by stories they connected with.

Charity helps.

The Ashes in Napa

The fire took our family’s house. And reminded us that everything is temporary.

The land remains.
The knowledge remains.

Yes, Trump is an enemy of the constitution and the republic.

It is not required that John Waters be liked.
He is part of this world and does not seem to indulge in coercion.

In Costa Rica, Loss in the Clouds

Among the Quakers in Monteverde’s cloud forest, I have found peace, and a willingness to endure.

I have not found that need.
I am, perhaps a slave of things.
I want tools and books.
I have no objection to making or to killing at need.
I am not a Quaker or a patron of war.

Deaths of Dozens of Canada Geese Linked to Moldy Bread or Grain

Malone, N.Y., is a favorite bird-watching destination, but this year it was also the site of dozens of deaths attributed to a fungal infection.

These are migrating birds.
There is not much local grain to the north of Malone.

I speculate that it is waste along the Canadian railways lost on its way east.
