How Pet Snakes Set off an Unlikely Chain of Events That Could Make You Sick

Opossums, raccoons and deer all but disappeared from Everglades National Park in Florida after the Burmese python invaded. When they vanished, mosquitos turned to feeding on rats that can carry encephalitis. That could put humans at risk.

The pythons are a problem.
Everglades Fever is said to have no human cases.
"While no known human outbreaks have occurred in Florida, Dr. Burkett-Cadena and his team pieced together information from Venezuela, Guatemala and Mexico, where it is thought that viruses in the same family may have spread from rats to people."
The snakes should be eating the rats.

Co-Parenting With Alexa

Machines will make a raft of decisions for my kids and others like them as they proceed through life. I’m worried.

A machine can only say "Yes, Master".
The question becomes who is the master.
Amazon is not our master.

Ms. Bush Lauren, who lives in the West Village, spends a lot of time on the playground with her toddler, and likes to brunch locally.

The Truth and Fiction of Adam and Eve

In a new cultural history of the origins and readings of the Genesis story, Stephen Greenblatt traces a long arc.

Marilynne Robinson should write her own book.
I am fascinated by what scholarship can learn and not much interested in what faith knows.

Will Liberals Give Weinstein the O’Reilly Treatment?

The disgraced Hollywood mogul promises to be a better progressive if given a second chance. Feminists shouldn’t fall for it.

His board of directors fired him.
There will be no more chances.

Out of Control on Contraception

“Contraception is anti-baby,” says the American Life League. O.K., not a sentiment most Americans share.

The only way to be not guilty is to not do the act.
The Republicans are guilty.

Whatever Happened to Just Being Type A?

The author Gretchen Rubin’s division of people into Upholders, Obligers, Questioners and Rebels has earned her a devoted following. But I’m skeptical.

Living is its own thing.
There is no single right way to live.
There are better and worse ways.
Theft is not a good way to live.

Proseletizers are engaged in theft.
