45 Whales Die on Indian Shore

Scores of whales washed ashore near the Tiruchendur beach in the state of Tamil Nadu. Though many were towed back to sea, 45 died.

From time to time it happens.

Trial Begins in G.M. Ignition Defect Case

In a federal courtroom in Manhattan, General Motors raised questions about the story of a man who was injured in a 2014 accident in Oklahoma.

Trials.
G.M. is trying to stay out of bankruptcy.

Maryland: Trial in Freddie Gray Death Complicated by Appeals Schedule

The trial of Officer Caesar R. Goodson Jr. has another scheduling obstacle, an appeals court set March 4 for oral arguments for another officer who is trying to avoid testifying.

Try Porter again.
Porter's conviction will clear the tangle.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Part of Florida Death Penalty

The justices ruled that jurors were not given enough of a say over which inmates should be put to death.

"That procedure was unconstitutional, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote for seven justices in the new decision. “The Sixth Amendment requires a jury, not a judge, to find each fact necessary to impose a sentence of death,” she wrote. “A jury’s mere recommendation is not enough.”"

I do not like Florida or its politics.

Strong Unions, Strong Democracy

Weakening labor increases inequality and instability. The Supreme Court should do neither.

A labor force is invested in a corporation.
Management's fiduciary responsibility includes labor.

Cakeage, or How Restaurants Really Feel About Cake Brought In

Owners and chefs debate whether to add the fee for cakes brought in by customers.

A restaurant meal is performance art.

Pay the cakeage or rent another venue.

Florida’s Death Machine Loses Again

The Supreme Court finally strikes down an unconstitutional law requiring a judge, not a jury, to sentence someone to death.

The problem is one of sovereignty.
The southern states do not believe they ceded their sovereignty to the federal government.
This belief must end.
I have no tools to manipulate faith in individuals.

U.S. Restricts Movement of Salamanders, for Their Own Good

Scientists hope that a rule making it illegal to import salamanders or move them across state lines, will help stop a deadly fungus.

We need to find or build a phage for the fungus.

I am not in a position to undertake the project.

Look among the survivors.

A Smarter Way to Get Guns Off the Street

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced two encouraging new approaches in pursuit of a safer city.

The second amendment is a failed experiment.
Such failures are why the amendment process was installed.
The nation must deal with the schism eliminating the right to keep and bear arms will produce.

Mississippi: Officer Cleared in Death of Man in Buggy

A grand jury declined to indict a white police officer in the July death of a black man in a horse-drawn buggy, saying that the man died of asphyxiation after ingesting cocaine and that the officer did not use excessive force.

Welcome the investigation.

Where Police Violence Encounters Mental Illness

There is a crisis in police violence, but there is also a crisis in mental health services that we leave to the police to solve.

Until we learn to diagnose and cure the mentally ill the best we can do is place them in loving care.

I do not know how to do that.
There is no reversible off switch.
Locked wards do not work.
Part of it is faith.

Extradite El Chapo Guzmán

The Mexican government should move swiftly to send the world’s top drug kingpin to the United States for trial.

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Mexico are not comforting.
The U.S. is not at peace with its southern neighbor.
Extradition is a diplomatic relation.
I expect the process to drag on for years.

Bill Cosby’s Lawyers Say Binding Promise in 2005 Should Prevent Prosecution

Lawyers say the former Montgomery County district attorney, Bruce Castor, made a binding promise not to prosecute Mr. Cosby in the Andrea Constand case.

"Bill Cosby’s lawyers have made it clear in court papers that they plan to use a former district attorney who once declined to prosecute the entertainer as a critical weapon in their effort to battle sexual assault charges filed against him last month in Pennsylvania."

The strategy should work.

I don't have to like it and I don't.

Board for Ferguson Schools Is Accused of Racial Bias

A lawsuit against the Ferguson-Florissant School District board argues that at-large voting discriminates against minorities.

The communities that use the schools must elect the schoolboards.
The board decides how resources are distributed among the community's schools.

Poland Deviates From Democracy

Poland’s retreat from the fundamental values of liberal democracy is reprehensible and foolish.

The problem is a diplomatic one.
The name of Radio Free Europe should change.
Its mission of teaching democracy and the rule of civil law should continue.
Let it be run by NATO.
Use what works.
Private enterprise cannot continue that mission.
I suggest "Radio Europe".

It must use them all.
