Flint will not be saved.

What Does It Mean When Animals Suffer a Vast Die-Off?

Seabirds called murres are undergoing a die-off in Alaska, probably because of warming water, but the larger meaning of such die-offs is hard to know.

The human population needs to know why creatures are dying.  They are as dependent on the planetary ecology as we are.  Death of populations indicate a change humans must adapt to in order to continue to survive.

Rural Oregon’s Lost Prosperity Gives Standoff a Distressed Backdrop

Areas that were once economically important languish as jobs are clustered in urban centers, creating a feeling of powerlessness as their populations grow older, poorer and less educated.

Eastern Oregon has lived on extraction economics.
The grass was exhausted and the cattle industry shrank to a sustainable intensity.
The timber industry cut the trees.
There are no more trees to cut.  The industry has died.

These businesses will not return.

The federal government can wait for the attempt to resurrect them to collapse from futility.

In Rural Alabama, a Longtime Mistrust of Medicine Fuels a Tuberculosis Outbreak

Marion, Ala., is in the throes of a tuberculosis outbreak so severe that it has posted an incidence rate that is about 100 times greater than the state’s and worse than many developing countries.

"Others suggested that the history of medicine in Alabama, including the notorious medical experimentation in Tuskegee, was hampering efforts to contain tuberculosis.
“There is a mistrust of government medicine, in the African-American community especially, because of Tuskegee,” Dr. Perkins said. “It dates back to that. We haven’t dealt with the damage of Tuskegee in this state at any meaningful level.”"

Take action.

In Compromise, Mayor de Blasio Agrees to Limit Carriage Horses in Central Park

The plan, which would also ban pedicabs in the park below 85th Street, eases a longtime political headache for the mayor, whose devotion to ending the carriage industry has proved broadly unpopular.

"Two years after he embraced the polarizing cause of ending the Midtown horse-carriage trade, a request of some of his most generous campaign supporters, Mr. de Blasio is set to reduce the size of the industry and confine its horses to Central Park."

The fight is not over.

The internal combustion engine does not belong in the city.

State of Emergency Declared Over Man-Made Water Disaster in Michigan City

In response to the water crisis in Flint, Mich., President Obama authorized FEMA to provide water, filters and other supplies for residents whose water has been poisoned with lead.

"The president’s action on Saturday authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to “coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency” in Genesee County. FEMA can provide up to $5 million in federal aid to help provide water, filters, and other items for up to 90 days to residents whose water has been contaminated since the city switched water supplies in a cost-cutting move in 2014."

Gov. Rick Snyder is still in denial.

Zika Warning Spotlights Latin America’s Fight Against Mosquito-Borne Diseases

The C.D.C. advisory for pregnant women to avoid more than a dozen Latin American countries comes only a few months before the start of the Olympic Games in Brazil.

"“The announcement by the C.D.C. is entirely appropriate, given the risks in Brazil,” said Dr. Artur Timerman, 62, an infectious disease specialist in São Paulo.
He said that he had advised his own daughter, who is 32, to avoid getting pregnant now in Brazil. “If she wants to do so, her best course of action is to leave the country and go to a place where Zika is not a problem,” he said."

The U.S. succeeded in cleaning up the mosquitoes in The Canal Zone of Panama.
