Study Shows Larger Effect of Clouds on El Niño

The research indicates that cirrus clouds trap the heat coming off the Pacific Ocean, further warming the atmosphere.

The connection is not obvious.
The assumption is that the warm water comes from the eastern Pacific.  It is not generated locally.

Bitter Debate Over Nuclear Power Simmers in Rural South Korea

In 2010, three villages agreed to give up their land to make room for a power plant, plunging the area into a battle over whether the plant would be a savior or a death knell.

It would be better to build nuclear power plants now.
They can stand unfueled and untested against future need.
If the politics are too unfavorable they could be built on the north east coast.

The Boomers will retire to the country soon.

Report Finds Juvenile Program Failed to Reduce Robberies, but Police Are Expanding It

Despite the lack of success shown in a 2014 report, police officials say the Juvenile Robbery Intervention Program is valuable because of the good will it creates.

Something is reducing the crime rate.

More of whatever that is should be done.

Social Security in an Election Year

With more retirees relying on the program, candidates should be suggesting sensible fixes, not broad cutbacks.

"Ultimately, strengthening Social Security requires a growing and healthy economy. The Democratic candidates have credible ideas for creating jobs and raising wages that would revitalize the tax base for Social Security. Those and other sensible fixes, not deep and broad cutbacks, will ensure that the system continues to provide a basic level of guaranteed retirement income for all workers."

At Eleven Madison Park, a New Minimalism

The highly acclaimed Manhattan restaurant is simplifying its tasting menu and how it is presented to diners.

The service I want from a tasting menu is exploration of a modest corner of the world of food.
After I choose the corner I would like a knowledgeable guide.
The guidence should not interfere with the experience I am having.
It could be a labeled and illustrated map of the small dish meal.
It is to be assumed that I am not knowledgeable.
I would have ordered my desire if I were.

Despite a Warmer Winter, Annual Polar Bear Club Swim Still Chills

It looked like Coney Island on a particularly festive summer day, except that it was Jan. 1, when thousands of people flock to the seaside to start their year off the right way — with an unseasonal ocean swim.
