Study Quantifies Liana Vines’ Threat to Forests

Researchers in Panama reported that after three years, forest areas with lianas had 76 percent less biomass than plots that had been cleared of vines.

The lianas evolved with the tropical forest.
They are, by definition, not a threat.
Carbon adsorption is a human goal.

Safety Questions About a Birth Control Device

Until there is better data, the F.D.A. should consider suspending sales of Essure, a contraceptive implant.

Contraception is politically contentious in all cases.
The Essure device is a sterilization.
It is not temporary or easily reversed.
The permanence of the resulting sterility may not have been communicated.
Microsurgery is not a satisfactory repair.

It’s time to repeal a misinterpreted New York statute that shields some police officers’ excessive use of force.

The law allows misconduct to be ignored.

Cruel and Unusual Punishments Before the Supreme Court

The justices heard cases involving the death penalty and life without the possibility of parole.

I have not contributed to the briefs or the oral argument.
Forecasting the court's decision is a fascinating game.
For me it is pointless.
After a decision I can point out the error if any to my congressman.
He is a doctrinaire conservative.
My recourse is my vote and my voice.

Florida is in error in both cases.

Tennessee: Off-Duty Officer Killed in Gunfight With Neighbor

A neighbor was charged on Monday with felony possession of a handgun in the killing of a Memphis police officer.

It appears that the charge of felony possession of a handgun is gratuitous.
Lorenzo Clark is not charged with first degree murder.
If he was not defending himself against an unprovoked attack he would be so charged.
The court should tell the Memphis police to mend their ways and send Mr. Clark home with a scolding and instructions to change his address.

Geoffrey Marcy’s Berkeley Astronomy Colleagues Call for His Dismissal

Astronomy faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, called on the administration to reconsider its approach to Dr. Marcy, who was found in a university investigation to have sexually harassed students.

Berkeley is noted for political activism.

"Outside of Berkeley, astronomers were still reeling and trying to reconcile the new revelations with their own experiences of Dr. Marcy."
The charge smells of witch hunting.
I note that the Berkeley administration has dismissed him.
