Mayor de Blasio, With Wary Eye on World Economy, Asks Agencies to Cut Costs

New York City’s budget director told department leaders that they must find ways to trim expenses, drawing cautious praise from fiscal watchdogs.

A city government is much more like an individual than
a sovereign nation.
A city cannot create money.  It is not a bank.

Does a Carbon Tax Work? Ask British Columbia

A conservative party in the province introduced a carbon tax in 2008. The important lesson for American skeptics is that the policy worked as advertised.

"Look at it this way. A study by Michael Greenstone and Thomas Covert of the University of Chicago and Professor Knittel concluded that at current battery prices, for an electric vehicle to be cheaper to run than a gas-power car, oil would have to cost $350 a barrel. Last year, it averaged $50. To make up the difference would require a carbon tax of $700 a ton of carbon dioxide."

Yes but . . .

We have no effective replacement for carbon fuels in mobile equipment.

The marginal cost of batteries is prohibitive.

Perhaps automotive civilization can move away from travel.
I do not see that happening without a climate catastrophy.

Summonses, Not Arrests, for Small Crimes in Manhattan

Police officers in the borough will no longer arrest most people who commit minor offenses under a policy shift that officials hope will help to reduce a backlog of cases.

There is probably no such thing as a small crime.
These acts should not then carry legal penalties.
