End an Unfair Restriction on College Aid

A draconian law denying government grants and loans to people with even a minor drug offense should be repealed.

Limiting education has been a Republican goal.

Michigan: State Senate Approves Aid to Help Flint Residents Pay Water Bills

Michigan’s Senate completed legislation authorizing $30 million in supplemental aid to help Flint residents pay their water bills.

The unpaid water bills will not be paid.

When lead is eliminated from the delivered water billing can resume.

House Hunting in ... Malta

Malta’s business-friendly tax structure and sunny Mediterranean climate attracts international property buyers, and demand outweighs supply.

A large income is necessary to maintain such an establishment.

In Florida, an Unlikely Battle Over Fracking Intensifies

About 70 counties and cities in Florida have passed ordinances to ban or oppose fracking, even as the State Legislature considers a bill that would overrule them.

"Snow birds" have seen the cost of oil.

Imagining a Rikers Island With No Jail

The sensible thing to do with the jail complex is to close it.

New York City needs a jail.
NIMBY will isolate that jail.
As long as the courts are jammed the jailed population will be large.
Jail guard is not a respected job.
The guards will be of minimal competence, over worked and underpaid.

The obvious solution is to unjam the courts.
Trials of captives who cannot make bail should be held within twelve hours.  Preferably they should be the same day.

A Danger to Our Grizzlies

Grizzly bear populations are already threatened. A move to strip their federal protection would decimate the species.

Protected species need their protections.

$1,300,000 Homes in Vermont, Washington D.C., and Kansas

This week’s properties include a contemporary in Overland Park, Kan., a ski house in Stowe, Vt., and a Tudor in Washington, D.C.

How much space do you want?
I see no point in Washington beyond a rental for a few years at most.  I want to build a studio soon after we pick a location.

Effective Firearms Regulation Is Constitutional

The Supreme Court held in 2008 that the Second Amendment conferred a right “to keep and bear arms.” But it did not prohibit strong gun laws.

OK

The system should be national.
That probably means the demise of the Republican Party organization.

The Plan to Shut Down Gitmo

Congress should carefully consider the Obama administration’s viable plan to shut down the prison at Guantánamo Bay by the end of the year.

Moving the remaining prisoners at Guantanamo onto U.S.

The Republican Party will not allow that to happen.
