North Dakota: Cuts Ordered to Balance Budget

Gov. Jack Dalrymple on Monday ordered cuts of just over 4 percent to government agencies and a raid on state savings to make up for a more than $1 billion budget shortfall caused by the slumping oil industry.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple must decide where future funds will come from.
He can continue to spend down the state's credit
or put the state on the sustainable course that has been promised.

Obamacare is doing well.

The Pentagon’s New Parental Leave

Efforts to move the military’s leave policies closer to those of the private sector could have a positive effect on civilian employees, too.

The view of employment is rather twisted.
The federal government is trying to be a better employer.
A civil service academy in paralel to the other service academies would be a good idea.

The BMW X5 40e, a Hybrid for the Future

The fuel savings may not offset the cost at today’s prices, but this well-engineered and smooth-driving S.U.V requires no other sacrifices of its owner.

"With a pure battery range of 14 miles, the 40e is no Volt. It charges in three hours on 220-volt current, seven hours on 110. It can reach 75 miles an hour on battery power alone; the gas engine assists from there. It does not have to be charged up to operate, but that defeats the purpose, right?
BMW’s eDrive consists of a turbocharged 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine assisted by a 111-horsepower alternating-current electric motor tucked into the 8-speed transmission housing."

BMW is following Ford.  The system is not a good one.

A Waterfront Route to Serve the Poor, Not Just the Wealthy

A planned streetcar line running from Brooklyn to Queens would provide a lifeline for a stretch of New York City that is starved of mass transit options.

The city will have to ban parking on the streetcar rout.

Zegna Confirms Stefano Pilati’s Departure

The head of design for Ermenegildo Zegna Couture is the fourth designer in the past year to leave a job after only approximately three years.

Fashion is always different in the same way.
It is time for a different way.
Drugs are no longer leading the youth of the wealthy astray.
Socialism is having another flowering.
It has proven an evening primrose.
Urban living with live in  help might work.
It will require a new housing stock.

Kent, Conn., Looks at Training Teachers to Use Guns

The move by Kent’s selectmen prompted Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to say he would be “frightened and disappointed” if any town adopted the firearms training program.

A gun out of reach is pointless.
A gun in a classroom is within reach of many.

Fewer guns is our best bet.

Public Housing Agencies Seek More Time to Enact Smoking Ban

Officials with the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development said they have received more than 1,000 comments about the proposed ban.

A ban on smoking in public housing should not be imposed.
An end to tobacco addiction would be a good thing.
Prohibition of tobacco will not work any better than the prohibition of alcohol.
The price of tobacco is already high enough to stimulate an illegal trade.  Expect Mexican imports as the price continues to rise.

Virginia: Under Scrutiny, Teen Dating Site Is Removed

Facebook has taken down from its site group called Teen Dating and Flirting, which stirred outrage over its sexually explicit content after the recent murder of a 13-year-old Virginia girl.

Facebook is an antisocial operation.
Dealing with adolescent sexuality is a skill we have yet to develop.
Prohibition does not work.
We do not tolerate the skin trades which appear to have managed the problem in the past.
