Richard P. Von Herzen, Explorer of Earth’s Undersea Furnaces, Dies at 85

Dr. Von Herzen, an oceanographer, uncovered thousands of miles of interconnected volcanoes where the planet’s oceanic plates pull apart and ooze molten rock, continually rearranging the Earth’s crust.

I did not know him.  I regret that.

HSBC Case Tests Transparency of Deferred Prosecution Agreements

A judge’s order to release secret documents raises questions about how much involvement courts should have over settlements related to corporate wrongdoing.

The objective of the justice department is the end of a practice.
If that can be done neatly and quietly that is a better result.
Public humiliation and a destructive bankruptcy are avoided.

Quiet arrangements tend to be time limited.
The suppressed practice can reoccur.
Practitioners like that thought.
Prosecutors do not like the possibility.

Touring Italy by Vespa

Travelers can live the celebrated sweet — and authentic — Italian life by taking a half- or full-day tour on a Vespa.

Pregnancy Clinics Fight for Right to Deny Abortion Information

Crisis pregnancy centers in California are in a battle with the state over a new law requiring them to post a notice that free or low-cost abortion care is available.

The requirement that discussions not openly religious be factual looks reasonable to me.  I am glad to agree with the courts of California.
