    Tax Soda, Subsidize Vegetables
Taxing junk food and making healthy food more affordable would save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs.
Mark Bitmann does understand The use of tax and subsidy to do social engineering.

Make Way for the Radical Center
A third way is on the way for the 2012 presidential campaign. And its convention will be held on the Internet.
There will be no successful third party while the primaries are the way to the ballot.  The choices are there.
The other problem is that the political centre is far to the left of either major party.  Do not waste a vote on the dead.

    Republicans, Zealots and Our Security
Forget about Iran. These days, the most dangerous threat to national security comes from our own elected officials.
Nicholas  Kristof gives the enemy within another name.

Norway Attacks Put Spotlight on Rise of Right-Wing Sentiment in Europe
Across Europe, opposition to Muslim immigrants, globalization, the power of the European Union and the drive toward multiculturalism has proven a potent political force.
It has raised a counterforce.  Europe keeps getting into trouble from the right. The U.S. seems to be left blind.  Leftists all look alike.

Addictive Personality? You Might be a Leader
What we seek in leaders is often the same risk-taking personality type that is found in addicts.
You seem to have the need.
    I fight it in myself.
I find that I never know the way forward until I know where it is.
I will mostly follow your lead and only sometimes get stubborn.
When I do, dig.  I may have a reason.

The Master’s as the New Bachelor’s
Call it credentials inflation. A four-year degree may not cut it anymore.
The Bachelor's has never been enough for entry into the professions.  There has always been an apprenticeship or a professional school as a barrier to entry.  This article shows a profound ignorance of our social organization.
There is no entry level in our national economy.

After Long Wait, Same-Sex Couples Marry in New York
Hundreds of couples began marrying on Sunday in a new milestone for gay rights.
I have probably built the wrong structure in my mind.
Sooner is better.  As soon as you can is best.  Let us begin.

Scientific Advances on Contraceptive for Men
Scientists believe male contraceptives hold promise for being safe, effective and, also important, reversible.
I wish we still needed it.

What Apple Has That Google Doesn’t: An Auteur
While Google makes its design choices by consensus, Apple has found success by relying on the eye of Steve Jobs, whose role resembles that of a film auteur.
It keeps the aesthetic design stable.
    The engineering design needs help.
I can fix the aesthetics.  I can do less for the engineering.
I have to work at engineering.

For Winehouse, Life Was Messier Than Music
Under better circumstances, Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” would have been a foundation for a maturing catalog. Now, it remains a warning she could not heed.
The performing life is a monster that eats people.
Its keepers know there will be another volunteer.
The next show is all that matters.
    Rock on, it's show time.

How the Deficit Got This Big
A look at how the economy went from healthy surpluses at the end of the Clinton era to the current deficit.
This is very much the way I see it.
    It is not very complicated.
It is hard to present it without sounding shrill and partisan.
I do sound shrill and am partisan by default.

    Using 14th Amendment to Raise
A Civil War-era provision in the 14th Amendment makes for an interesting discussion on whether President Obama could use it to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling.
This makes the present situation the result of a long standing right wing conspiracy.

Hulu, Billed as Tomorrow’s TV, Looks Boxed In Today
Questions about how to make money pose a challenge to the innovative Web site’s future and eventual buyer.
Hulu is broadcast television. We rejected pay television long ago.
    Broadcast television is advertising supported.

Train Wreck in China Raises Questions of Safety
The train accident that killed 35 has added to a national sense that safety is taking a back seat to China’s infrastructure development.
The death toll is a good deal higher.
The Railways know how to deal with this kind of incident before it turns deadly.  The technology is very primitive.  There should be a conductor and several trainmen in the crew.  emergency supplies consist of some lanterns, flags and caps.   These are walked back from the disabled train
several stopping distances and set up to warn the following train of the blockage ahead.   The time separation of trains on a line must be sufficient to allow proper warning to be given.  The trainman must have time to walk the alarm back the necessary kilometre and a half.

Police Say Oslo Suspect Admits ‘Facts,’ not Guilt, in Massacre
The man charged with the attacks in Oslo that killed at least 93 people claims to have acted alone and foretold his actions in a manifesto calling for a Christian war, police said.

It seems rather extreme and personally expensive as an advertising ploy.

Across New York, Hundreds of Gay Couples to Marry on Sunday
Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples began marrying on Sunday — the first taking their vows just after midnight — in a new milestone for gay rights advocates.
Really fixing the situation  will have to wait for the next congress.  Getting the Defence of Marriage Law off the books will require a different partisan balance.
