I expect to get off for the Adirondacks during the day tomorrow. I will post some tomorrow night.  The trip is about 6 hours steady driving.

    Hemingway, Hounded by the Feds
A friend of Ernest Hemingway recalls the last year of his life, when he suffered from depression and paranoia.
This states that there are files and transcripts by the F.B.I. of Hemingway at the end of his life.  J. Edgar Hoover was a monster.

Ruptured Pipeline Spills Oil Into Yellowstone River
An ExxonMobil pipeline running under the Yellowstone River in south central Montana ruptured late Friday, spilling crude oil into the river and forcing evacuations.
Just another black mark and reason regulate the oil companies.
They really can't run a clean operation without help.
They will not think of it that way.

In San Francisco, Silicon Valley Culture Stands Apart
San Francisco is giving tax breaks to businesses like Twitter that move to the city’s blighted neighborhoods, but tech company culture may not help an effort to improve the areas.
The areas are of the right sort. The city does not understand scale and corporate culture.  A successful redevelopment would call in a large variety of small struggling businesses with part time help.  the business would draw people and staff, the part time would put people with disposable money on the street where other businesses could serve them.  A large business orders in bulk, feeds internally, and expects its people to be at their desks while at work. A vital area has an on street population with spending money.  Corporate does not do that.  Colleges and universities do.  Households do.  Job shops do.  Retail markets do. Restaurants do.  Tradesmen do.

World Bank Is Opening Its Treasure Chest of Data
Robert B. Zoellick, the World Bank president, argues that its most valuable currency isn’t money — it’s information.
This is an article about a public relations project.
Here is the web site: http://www.worldbank.org/
I see they have a report on the Russian economy:

The content seems to be 4.4% growth this year, 4.0% next. growth in oil and wheat.  Maybe.  I think this call is doubtful.
They have not published on Greece.

The Young and Entrepreneurial Move to Downtown Detroit, Pushing Its Economic Recovery
Detroit, a city whose downtown is better known for its recent economic decline, is drawing a number of college-educated people under age 35.
There are always some vultures hanging around a carcase.  That city is dead.  It will not come back without a very profitable business.  I don't see one here.

Executive Pay at Big Companies Rose 23% Last Year
Updated figures show that median pay surged 23 percent last year for top executives at 200 big companies.I
I am not bothered by this but the share holders may be.
It bothers me more that this is thought to be news and bothersome.
The general state of the economy is much more bothersome.
This nation is not doing well.

For Hot Dogs, a Push for Truthful Labels
Manufacturers of processed meats like frankfurters are pushing for more accurate labeling rules when it comes to cancer-causing nitrite and nitrate.
If it does not make a difference, it does not belong on the label.

The Fans Are All Right for Harry Potter
Others may control the copyrights, the royalties and the theme park receipts, but they can’t keep Harry Potter’s wizardry out of millions of hearts.
Harry Potter is newish but the phenomenon is not.  It is a regular event in my universe.  So far the production houses have not understood the fiction with the possible exception of Star Wars, Jurassic Park and ET.
    There are a few more.

When a Predator Collides With a Fabricator
What happens in a he said-she said case, when he’s known to be a predator and she’s revealed to be a liar?
The presumption of this is wrong.  There is physical evidence.  Casual sex was not in her job description.  She says rape.  He must prove it was not.  That is very nearly impossible.  she would have to voluntarily retract her statement.

Governor of Saga Prefecture Holds Key to Japan’s Nuclear Future
Yasushi Furukawa of Saga Prefecture must decide whether to support a request by Prime Minister Naoto Kan to restart two reactors at a local nuclear plant.
Get the plants working and earning.  Follow up with earthquake and Tsunami engineering.  The best course is to convince everyone that they are as safe as possible.  Shock mounts, flood tolerant systems,  Long term backup power, hardened grid connections, pressurized cool down, off site spent fuel cooling and early reprocessing.  The list goes on.

Collapsing Strauss-Kahn Case Adds to Doubts on Manhattan Prosecutor
Second-guessing of District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. has intensified as a sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn appears to have collapsed.
    No collapse.
The case also unfolded as a rift had already developed between Mr. Vance and the chief of the office’s sex crimes unit, Lisa Friel. She stepped down last week
If the case is called off it will be a great miscarriage of justice.

Gov. Nikki Haley Has a High Profile and Higher Hopes
Nikki Haley, who came into office with Tea Party support, is, at 39, the nation’s youngest governor and is seen by many as an up-and-coming figure in the Republican Party.
If one establishes an exploitable environment one expects exploitation.
I do not expect South Carolina to suffer quietly.

Closing a State? The Rules Are Tricky
Minnesota was in Day 2 of a shutdown, and residents were left to navigate what it really meant to shut down a state.
The Republicans count this as a win.  The cutting really should be shut down.  Unforeseen consequences are what a shut down is about.
Why are they cutting in summer?

Chomsky Urges Chavez to Show Mercy to Judge
Noam Chomsky, whom President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela often cites as a source of inspiration, issued a call for clemency for a judge held under house arrest.
It doe's sound like Chavez is being arbitrary.  He is, after all, a dictator.

Some With Histories of Mental Illness Petition to Get Their Gun Rights Back
Across the country, states are increasingly allowing people who lost their firearm rights because of mental health issues to appeal to have them restored.
    Crazy people do crazy things.
We really should not help them do those things.
I learn that nature does not care.
It does everything it can all the time.
People care what happens and take some actions at chosen times.
    People design.  Nature sorts.

Bjork’s ‘Biophilia’ at the Manchester International Festival
For her latest venture, “Biophilia,” Björk has brought together recording-studio collaborators, instrument makers, smartphone app designers, scientists and a musicologist.
Drum machines are just not that interesting.  Phil Spector and Jerry Garcia are gone, there should be room for this over thought noise.
I have little patience with it if it is as presented here.
I will hear it before I buy it.

Taking Lead, Iraqis Hope U.S. Special Operations Commandos Stay
Members of Iraq’s well-trained special operations force say that American troops must stay longer to continue training and advising.

It is really nice to be able to call on overwhelming force when committing armed robbery.
