Executive Pay at Big Companies Rose 23% Last Year
Updated figures show that median pay surged 23 percent last year for top executives at 200 big companies.
Bad public relations.  Otherwise not a crime.

Number of Female Cyclists Lags in New York, With Safety as a Concern
Men on bicycles outnumber women three to one, a stark contrast from cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam where women outnumber men.
A larger sample would help.  The messengers are a nuisance.  Car doors are always a problem.  It is getting better.  The sweaty problem is mostly about the speed of travel and the position on the bike.

Dan Savage on the Virtues of Infidelity
Scandals be damned. The goal of marriage, argues Dan Savage — devoted husband, proud father, sex columnist — should be stability, not monogamy.
I LOVE YOU.    Others have superordinate rights.

Some With Histories of Mental Illness Petition to Get Their Gun Rights Back
Across the country, states are increasingly allowing people who lost their firearm rights because of mental health issues to appeal to have them restored.
    Very Frightening.

Exclamation Points and E-Mails: Cultural Studies
Mark Twain railed against abuse of exclamation points. Thank goodness he didn’t live to see the age of e-mail.

    If you dare.
Sooner is better.          As soon as you can is best.

The Young and Entrepreneurial Move to Downtown Detroit, Pushing Its Economic Recovery
Detroit, a city whose downtown is better known for its recent economic decline, is drawing a number of college-educated people under age 35.
Vultures  The city is not going to recover to what it was.
It must shrink to fit the industry it can have.

A Love Still Supreme, but John Coltrane's House in Ruins
John Coltrane’s house in Long Island, where he lived and composed some of his immortal jazz, is crumbling and in need of restoration.
People collect the damnedest things.  I wish him luck with the restoration.  I can even see why it is of value.  I really see no financial return.

In San Francisco, Silicon Valley Culture Stands Apart
San Francisco is giving tax breaks to businesses like Twitter that move to the city’s blighted neighborhoods, but tech company culture may not help an effort to improve the areas.
It will not do what the city wants done.
These moves will not put people with cash on the street during the day.

Banks Easing Terms or Debt on Some Option ARM Loans
Two of the nation’s biggest lenders are quietly modifying loans for tens of thousands of borrowers who have not asked for help but whom the banks deem to be at special risk.
A rational move by banks but not an expected one.  A statistic on how common this kind of thing is would be very welcome.

    Gus, the Lonely Polar Bear
We witness a polar bear’s grief and taste our own memories of love, loss and loneliness. Our wild heart goes out to him.
    I miss you.
I have no desire for a dog of my own, I will happily share a dog with you.
In the wild polar bears eat people.

Thais Back Ousted Prime Minister’s Party in Landslide
Sunday’s election results are a vindication for Thaksin Shinawatra, a populist champion of Thailand’s rural poor who was ousted in a 2006 coup.
I hope it sticks this time.

World Bank Is Opening Its Treasure Chest of Data
Robert B. Zoellick, the World Bank president, argues that its most valuable currency isn’t money — it’s information.
The information needs to be better indexed.

When a Predator Collides With a Fabricator
What happens in a he said-she said case, when he’s known to be a predator and she’s revealed to be a liar?
It is not a he said she said case. There is physical evidence that can only be dismissed if she says the contact was consensual.
Why are there records of these conversations and was there a warrant?
How could such a warrant be for this case?  This seems much like it may be inadmissible.

    Phone-Call Cartography
By analyzing aggregated cellphone traffic interesting patterns emerge about how people connect.
The patterns are not available from this presentation. The colours are indistinguishable and the linear chart is indistinct and too busy.

French See Strauss-Kahn Case as American Folly
A dormant anti-Americanism has been reawakened here, fueled by a sense that the raw, media-driven culture of the United States has undermined justice and fair play.
    It has.
Take this case to trial and get a conviction.

The D.A. Stole His Life, Justices Took His Money
A Supreme Court’s ruling has made it even more likely that innocent people will be railroaded by untrained prosecutors.
Death is not a penalty except to the survivors. Judicial killing as we have done it is a bad idea. Repeal it.  The "conservative" majority on the court must end.  The sooner that happens the better for all of us.
These are not incompetent prosecutors but incompetent lawyers.
They have no business before the bar.

Indignation, Anger and Confusion in France Over Strauss-Kahn Case
Days after the revelation that the case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn was on the verge of collapse, France reacted with a mix of Gallic indignation at the American justice system, fevered speculation about his political rehabilitation and viscera...
They should. We deserve it. He cannot be rehabilitated. If it happens I will be even more shocked.  I still expect him to land in prison.
There is a report that he opposed the Greek loan.  If so this is possibly a very dirty game.

    Opinion
This graphic is uninformative in any medium. It should be searchable And separable. I should be able to look at areas of relation and call density separately. an area should relate to others as a tree with the width of channels indicating the number of calls. another page could show the number of local calls.

    William and Kate, Meet L.A.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are to travel to Los Angeles, a nation unto itself. Here are some suggestions for how to handle the culture shock.
I am left wondering why they would do that to themselves.
