    Getting to Crazy
Commentators seem shocked at Republican unreasonableness as a debt default looms, but it is the end result of a process that has lasted decades.
Eventually even Paul Krugman must stop giving the benefit of the doubt to the Republicans.  Getting what they say they want is a way to get them to learn or die.
    Depressions are not fun.

Internet Use Affects Memory, Study Finds
Subjects were more likely to remember information that they would not be able to retrieve from a computer.
    I invent.
Linear memory is useless for that. I use what I would call associative memory. The facts are not that important.  What I use and need to use is the structure implied by the way the facts fit together.
The computer is not good at that structure.  I can check the facts but the links between them are sketchy.

Study of Alpha Male Baboons Shows It’s Stressful at the Top
Alpha males may hold power and attract females, but a study of baboon troops in Kenya shows they also have very high levels of stress.
I know it and you know it.  I would rather stand back and think.

Behind Battle Over Debt, a War Over Government
Intense exchanges over the debt limit have made it clear that it is not so much a budget negotiation as a broader clash between the two parties over the size and role of government.
    This writer can't read.
I think we will go into default because both sides think it is a way out.
Wave good bye to the Republican party.

Rebekah Brooks Resigns From Murdoch’s British Subsidiary
After days of mounting pressure, the embattled chief executive of Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper operations, announced on Friday that she had resigned.
No amount of apology Will repair the damage.
    Just remove the violation.
    Have her find another profession.
The intelligence service can use her talents.

The product, Imprelis, was hailed as environmentally friendly but is now a suspect in thousands of fallen trees.

Protesters Get Creative in Post-Soviet Nations
Street politics have lost their relevance in many former Soviet countries, as the political opposition has withered away. But innovative forms of protest are popping up.
Educating a protester is one of the hardest things to do.  Not all problems can be solved with protest.  Demanding a better life does not get one delivered.

    Death and Budgets
Much of the budget mess may stem from a deep cultural antipathy toward recognizing our own mortality.
David Brooks gets it wrong as usual.  Hospice care is available and is chosen by the aged more than the grand children are willing to admit.
It is the reason there are durable powers of attorney and health care proxies.  Some of the saddest stories I know are of the old whose children would not let them go when their time came.
I notice that it is the Republican objection that took end of life discussions out of the health care program.
There is gold in them thar ills.

    Out of Poverty, Family-Style
    Life is intensely distracting.
A simple list of projects and a peer group to consult looks to be enough to get people going in a direction.

Google+ Gets a Leg Up on Facebook
Google+, Google’s social network, has easy-to-use privacy controls and allows video chats with as many as 10 people.
Video chats are not a feature.  Group chats  are not a feature either.
My local demands are such that real time is very difficult.

Food Makers Push Back on Ads for Children
As pressure increases on the food industry to fight childhood obesity, a group of food makers suggested guidelines that are short of nutritional standards proposed by regulators.
Marketing to children is not a good idea.  Neither is marketing to parents.
There are new things to eat all the time.  Not marketing them is also not a good idea.  How much simple pandering should there be around the food business?
I find that I can buy malt syrup.  This should be maltose, a diglyceride of glucose.  No fructose there.  I will try it in the bread.

    U.S. Recognizes Rebels in Libya
The move allows the United States to fund the opposition with some of the assets frozen in American banks.
My only worry is committing early.  Europe needs the oil but there will be little flow for some time.  The move removes more hope from the mercenary units of the old regime.  Assassination day gets ever closer and this will speed it.

California to Require Gay History in Schools
California will become the first state to require public schools to include the works of gays and lesbians in social science instruction and in textbooks.
Adding a chapter and a bunch of labels will not hurt the students and may help.  Reading between the lines should not be required.

Google Earnings Top Wall Street Expectations
The company’s stock price rose in after-hours trading following the results, which were the first under Larry Page as chief executive.
This reads as the board and major stock holders are feeling restive.
Google may not be making as much money as it possibly could.
I am not playing but if I were I would be very interested in how the ownership is distributed.  Are Larry Page's managing days numbered?
If they are Google's dominance is limited in duration.

The catalyst for a crackdown on food trucks in Manhattan was the recent explosion of high-end vendors in Midtown.

    The Start-Up of You
This is not your parents’ job market. Workers need to be able to invent, adapt and reinvent their jobs every day.
Bosses are being very lazy.  The help should leave with the business.
Unfortunately the business is all buying and selling.  What is called for is money at the bottom where it will be spent locally.  If there is nothing local to buy, the money leaves the area and the people follow it.  follow the money is more than a way to discover rot.

In Puerto Rico, Protests End Short Peace At University
“In Puerto Rico, Protests End Short Peace At University - http://nyti.ms/i30yuW #latism”

Puerto Rico has its first Republican governor in decades, Luis G. Fortuño, a pro-statehood conservative who has cut the number of public employees by about 17,000. Last weekend, while the protesters were marching in the streets, Mr. Fortuño was in Washington as a featured speaker at the Conservative Political Action conference.

The police force has been under investigation by the Department of Justice since 2008, and the American Civil Liberties Union has been pressing the government to finish.
“An important component of this is the police department’s relationship with the community,” Mr. Figueroa acknowledged. “There have been allegations of police brutality, especially in the Dominican and gay communities.”

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’ - Review
Childhood ends with tears and howls and swirls of smoke, the shock of mortality and bittersweet smiles in the grave, deeply satisfying final movie in the “Harry Potter” series.

This is probably a wonderful movie.  I will happily see it.
    It is not the novel.
It should not be mistaken for the novel.
I learned to be a fan of text.
I like my images better than those of most movie producers.
