Should California Tax Sales on Amazon? - Room for Debate
California and other states are trying to get revenue from online sales, but Amazon is fighting to be exempt.
Amazon has a choice.  They can remove their physical presence from California or they can pay sales tax on sales to California.
This has been the rule and I see little reason to change it.
An exemption would be a subsidy.
I have no idea why that would be given.

The Main Highway of Commerce - Room for Debate
Would you rather see public programs slashed in your state, or pay a few percent more on your purchase online?
    This is the wrong question.
Sales taxes are a terrible idea that Republican legislatures like.
They appear to be flat and are regressive.
I would far rather have more progression in the income tax.
    The oligarchs hate the thought.
As a designer everything I buy can be tax exempt.
I have not bothered.  The bookkeeping has not been worth the ten percent.  Boost that rate to twenty seven percent like the Canadians and it will be worthwhile or raise my rate of expenditures to a middle class level.

    Why Executions Should Be Televised
In this article from the next issue of Sunday Review, the authors argue that executions ought to be made public so people can see what is being done in their name.
This again is the wrong debate.  I am sure that the actual death is as humane as possible.
Death penalty trials should be broadcast with knowledgeable real time commentary.

For Asian Stars, Many Web Fans
On YouTube, a young generation of Asian-Americans has found a voice (and millions of eager fans) on the democratized platform.

They should organize and employ a producer.  They obviously have star power.  Hollywood was built by United Artists and other such cooperatives.  Only recently has a very conservative business management wrested control from the organized talent.

Gene Patent in Cancer Test Upheld by Appeals Panel
A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that genes can be patented, overturning a lower court decision that had shocked the biotechnology industry.
    Judge Sweet got it right.
The invention rests on the identity betweem the extracted genes and the genes found in the test subject and the lack of identity.  It is the lack of identity in the test subject that indicates a positive for cancer risk.  The genes in question are identical to healthy genes found in nature.  The patent fails on originality. and should be thrown out on further appeal.
The usual quibbles that I am not before the bar and am not looking at original material apply.
Utah has some very greedy corporations and no love of the federal courts.

"Over the centuries, around the world, we have always come home to one truth: Gardening sustains life, love and happiness."
I must find a building with enough property to build a reasonable garden.  Grey water storage and a drip system will go a long way toward acceptable operation.

    Consumers vs. the Banks
The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will need strong support from the White House in order to tackle crucial issues.
Forcing the nation into default will crash the banks and insurance companies.  It seems a "hard ball" tactic.  I think it could happen.
It is very late for any action to be in time to stop a default.  13:00 Sunday is even later.

Behind the 'Us vs. Them' Mentality Over Islam - Room for Debate
Today, Islam as “the internal and external enemy” is a staple of European political discourse.
For Muslims in Europe it is a generational thing.  The parents want to live there and are willing to do so quietly.  The children they brought with them into exile want to be dominant.  The radical preachers reinforce and build on that.  This in turn irritates and reinforces the racists, nationalists, witch hunters and other crazies that are our heritage.
It is defensive on all sides and all I can think to do about it is to prosecute criminal acts.  The screaming can go on but the physical attacks must stop.
