My great grandfather who rode circuit in The Cripple Creek District of Colorado would  say "anything but chicken when asked what he wanted for Sunday Dinner.
He is part of my history.  I did not eat those dinners.

and dressing with pan gravy. Fresh Cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, yams and green peas with pearl onions.
Sweet cider from the Jerico mill and wine in later years.

Each year, Camp Corral offers children of wounded veterans a trip to sleepaway camp to let go of the stress of growing up too fast.

We do not have the draft to fill the other ranks or the press gangs
to crew the Navy.

High unemployment does the job without the upset for our wars of choice.

The indoctrination of "basic training" is effective after a century of practice.

The other ranks of the military are one of the few places an underskilled
kid can support a family.
It is not peacetime and we are not in an existential war.
The Veterans Administration is underfunded and more soldiers are less than honorably separated from the services.
The less than honorable receive few benefits.
This is not good.
A mercenary army must be paid, exported or killed.
The street scenes of regency London are in train.
The spirit of Christmas present is coming.
Charles Dickens was a prophet.
