On the Hunt for Gluten-Free Holiday Cookies

Two pastry chefs, Emily Luchetti and Kelly Fields, suggest alternatives that don’t require wheat flour.

"There are plenty of other naturally gluten-free cookies to try this holiday season at cooking.nytimes.com. Once you’ve made the haystacks and the chocolate chip meringues, try Melissa Clark’s Chocolate Caramel Macarons, Mark Bittman’s Coconut-Nut Macaroons, Joan Nathan’s Almond Walnut Thumbprints and Almond Lemon Macarons or Kim Severson’s Chewy Chocolate Snowcaps.

Paris Deal Would Herald an Important First Step on Climate Change

There are reasons to believe the Paris negotiations are different from previous failed efforts, but an agreement would hardly halt global warming.

Chicago to Expand Use of Police Body Cameras

The announcement comes amid protests sparked by the release of a video from a police dashboard camera that showed a white police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times.

Garry F. McCarthy has been fired.
That may not save the Mayor.
It will not save the police.
The problem is the attempted coverup.

"GONZAGA 73, UCONN 70 Kyle Wiltjer scored 17 points, and No. 10 Gonzaga (4-1) held off No. 18 Connecticut in the third-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
UConn’s Rodney Purvis had a chance to tie the game but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Huskies (4-2) erased a 21-point deficit in the second half thanks in part to Domantas Sabonis’s foul trouble."

VW Argued for Easing New E.U. Tests on Emissions

New tests, meant to more closely reflect real-world driving conditions, are to take effect in 2017. But they face opposition in the European Parliament.

" Volkswagen successfully lobbied to remove two key parts of Europe’s forthcoming auto emissions tests, an internal email shows, including a provision to measure the significant pollution released when an engine is started but hasn’t yet warmed up.
The automaker also argued against requiring special, high-speed tests for cars designed to be driven fast. Volkswagen, which owns the Porsche, Lamborghini and Audi brands, is a leading producer of fast cars. “Such topics must be deleted,” a Volkswagen executive wrote in an email last year to the European Commission, the European Union’s executive branch, referring to the two provisions."

"In a women’s game, Moriah Jefferson scored 15 points and did not miss a shot as No. 1 Connecticut breezed past Chattanooga, 79-31, for its 41st consecutive victory.
The Huskies’ winning streak is the fourth longest in program history. The Huskies, the three-time defending national champions, have beaten each of their first four opponents by at least 40 points and have not lost since falling, 88-86, at Stanford on Nov. 17, 2014.
Jefferson made all five of her shots and four free throws. Breanna Stewart and Gabby Williams each added 14 points for the Huskies (4-0).
Chattanooga (5-3) ended a 17-game home winning streak."
