$1,250,000 Homes in California, Kansas and Delaware

This week’s properties include a contemporary in Kansas, a colonial in Delaware and a ski cottage in California.

Some interesting details.  They are more house than I want.

Bronx Woman, 28, Fatally Shot Inside Her Apartment

The woman, Shoshane Rattigan, was shot during an argument with her former boyfriend, while the couple’s 6-year-old son was home, the police said.

People crash and burn.
Children are left among the debris.
We could get one or two to adulthood.
I am not anxious to take on a ruin.

Packing Guns in the Day Care Center

A vote against an Ohio measure that extends concealed-carry privileges would be a rare vote for sanity.

I cannot repeal the second amendment without going through the process.
I can ask that it be enforced in detail.

Arms may be kept and born by members of well ordered militias in the pursuit of their public duties.

Hunting guns and ammunition must be duly licensed and available for inspection.

We do not need an armed population.

Edged tools can do enough damage.

The Real Problem with Police Video

Law enforcement officials shouldn’t be allowed to control camera footage.

Mass storage is cheap.
Run the camera all shift.
Store the record until all the incidents of the shift are resolved.
Access is by supoena.
Work product of investigations and arrests are part of the permanent record.

Contaminating Our Bodies With Everyday Products

The political system was slow to respond to the truth about cigarettes. Now it’s similarly behind in protecting us from toxic chemicals.

It would be good if congress did its job.
It would be better if the journalists did theirs.
It is best if the electorate does its job on the best information available.
Journalists must inform the public when congress is not serving the public interest so the voters can change congress.

Korean Player Agrees on Deal With Twins

The South Korean first baseman Byung Ho Park agreed to a $12 million, four-year contract with Minnesota.

"Two major leaguers tested positive for banned stimulants and one for another banned substance, according to the annual report of the sport’s drug program administrator. The players were not identified because the penalty for first offenses for stimulants and the drug DHEA is six more urine tests over the next year rather than a suspension. (AP)"

I am more interested in the penalty for a second offense.

The Chicago Police Scandal

Withheld evidence of the execution of Laquan McDonald implicates a cover-up not only by the Chicago Police Department but also by its campaigning mayor.

I have no fight with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
He must keep the support of the Chicago police.

U.S. Still in Danger of Losing War on AIDS, C.D.C. Director Says

Dr. Thomas R. Frieden and Dr. Jonathan Mermin, the C.D.C.’s chief of AIDS prevention, paint a bleak picture of the fight against the disease in an essay in The New England Journal of Medicine.

We do not have a cure or a vaccine.
Luckily one does not catch H.I.V.
One must go out and get it.
It is viewed as the wages of sin.
