On the Market in the New York Region

This week’s homes include a four-bedroom farmhouse in Ramsey, N.J., and a five-bedroom Tudor in Garden City, N.Y.

These would not fit.
They are not energy efficient.
I am reluctant to relocate in New Jersey.
I do not want a pool.

The number of jobs held by women and members of minority groups in sports departments at newspapers and websites remains low, according to a study by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports

More diversity may not help.

Seattle Team Wins a Sailing Challenge to Alaska

In the first nonmotorized boat race to Alaska, a three-man team from Seattle sailed its boat into Ketchikan harbor on Friday afternoon, miles ahead of the competition.

I worry about multihulls at sea.
They are bistable.
If they are rolled they stay rolled.

A jailed journalist says she has been targeted for exposing government corruption.

Azerbaijan is a sovereign nation.

Homes for Sale in Brooklyn and Manhattan

This week’s homes include one-bedroom co-ops in Lenox Hill and Park Slope, and a two-bedroom co-op in Greenwich Village.

I would like a wood fire.
I have learned that the living kitchen is the place for one.
If the roof is to be used there must be a deck above the weather seal.
The summer sun is not friendly.
I do not want to live at high density.

A Kids’ Camp on Catamarans

Exclusive Resorts and Broadreach are offering a summer program in the Caribbean that will include snorkeling, wakeboarding and paddleboarding.

It looks like fun.
The price is high.

The Dannemora Dilemma

An upstate New York jailbreak and the problems behind prison walls.

The states and the nation must do what they can.
The theory of incarceration must change.

A work by eL Seed, a French-Tunisian artist, has been chosen to adorn a Paris bridge that had its “love locks” removed by city authorities because of safety concerns.

There are better ways to make a public record.

On Tortuous Road to Freedom, ‘Angola Three’ Inmate Bides His Time

Albert Woodfox, who has spent most of four decades in solitary for the 1972 murder of a prison guard, has been indicted three times, tried twice, convicted twice — and had both convictions thrown out.

The Louisiana prosecutors have not been able to build a good case in two attempts.
The judge involved is convinced that a third attempt is pointless and has enjoined further prosecution.
It is necessary that he be released.

Profiting From New Markets

An online jeweler demonstrates how start-ups are changing business practices. Also, finding security flaws on your company website.

Before Crash, Germanwings Pilot Searched Web for Ways to Die

A prosecutor in Germany said Andreas Lubitz looked up terms like “living will” and “dying” and sought information about obtaining poisons.

It would be news if the search by the authorities was not made.

Chinese Hackers Circumvent Popular Web Privacy Tools

Exploiting a vulnerability in server software used by Chinese Internet portals, hackers were able to unmask visitors to sites deemed hostile by the government.

It is a feature of the Chinese portals.
It is not a bug.

Bad choices compound poverty, but society contributes, too.

Broken Boys, Thieves, Killers, and Now Escapees

Richard W. Matt and David Sweat emerged from curdled childhoods that included early displays of evil behavior, interviews and documents reveal.

I am not better informed.

They did not take the tools with them.
They did more work than could be accomplished in one night.

When Guarding Student Data Endangers Valuable Research

Some proposed privacy laws for students could unintentionally choke off the data’s original purpose: assessing and improving education.

The question of what controls data files continues to be debated.
The entity that assembled the file controls access to the files.
Other entities must ask permission to access unpublished files.
Permission may be granted for access to limited portions of such files.
