Do not get into bar fights with Irishmen.  The fight is what they value.

The conflict in the Levant is properly a civil war.
Organized military action is at an end yet the conflict continues.
Machiavelli pointed out that the way to deal with the loyalists of a defeated cause is execution. This is unacceptable in modern politics except as punishment for a recognized criminal act after trial in a civil court.
Hamas has been more than cooperative in committing criminal acts.
Israel must get access for the civil police to deal with the criminals.
So far internal and external political pressure has prevented such action.
The Turks have no legitimate cause for complaint.

JERUSALEM — Israel faced rising international pressure on Tuesday to ease its blockade of Gaza, as the United Nations Security Council called its approach to isolating the coastal strip “not sustainable” and pro-Palestinian groups planned fresh attempts to test the closing of sea lanes around the Hamas-controlled territory.

Sightless Parent Fish Don’t Produce Just Sightless Hybrids
In a deep cave in northeastern Mexico, there is a population of fish, Astyanax mexicanus, that through the course of evolution has lost its sight. In other caves not far away, there are more populations of the same species, also blind.

Gregor Mendel did this work long ago.("Between 1856 and 1863 Mendel cultivated and tested some 29,000 pea plants (i.e., Pisum sativum). This study showed that one in four pea plants had purebred recessive alleles, two out of four were hybrid and one out of four were purebred dominant. His experiments led him to make two generalizations, the Law of Segregation and the Law of Independent Assortment, which later became known as Mendel's Laws of Inheritance.") I saw it in high school.  This seems a very primitive way to approach vision problems.  Having the sighted dominant may well be useful in identifying the blinding mutations.
The work deserves support but the report is excessive.
I would enthusiastically have a child.  I worry about getting one supported and taught.  Financial and time limits are very real to me.  "God will provide" always looked to be poor planning.

Re: Sean Martin (#122): Your ignorance of the history of Israel's conflict with the Palestinians is appalling. We are not talking about events that occurred a thousand years ago, chronicled in an obsolete language, and unavailable for the common man to learn about. Go to any library that has newspapers on file from the late forties and do some reading. (You may be unfamiliar with good libraries but I am sure you could find one if you looked!) I would hope you come to understand the you can actually base an opinion on data instead of antisemitic propaganda. In summary, the reality doesn't look anything like the biased picture you present. You have been duped or you let yourself be duped. This is not a personal attack. ( It is a personal attack. )Unfortunately, your bigoted view is shared by other ignorant and/or naive individuals.

Every day, it seems we have indeed created a Frankenstien-esque monster by allowing the creation of this phony "state". Back in 1948, no one bothered to ask the Palestinians or the Syrians or the Jordanians what they thought of this absurd scheme: it was simply done, like it or lump it -- and on no more than some specious "claim" of the ownership of Jerusalem.

Well, sorry, folks, but the Israelis no more "own" Jerusalem than I do my family's ancestral lands back in Ireland. It's like coming back to the house you were born in and telling the current owners to get out because it's *yours*.

Perhaps if the Israelis hadnt been quite so heavy-handed when it comes to the Palestinians, we might not have the issues we do today. But when an entire nation is split in two, forced to live in less than poverty conditions, with all trade going in and coming out monitored by your "masters" -- well, let's be brutally honest here: what do you expect the Palestinians to do? Israel takes more and more of their land without even so much as a by-your-leave, encircles them with a political and physical wall -- and then whines to anyone who'll listen about what a "victim" they are because Hamas sends a few bottle rockets their way... while Israel responds with tanks and heavy duty mortar fire that leaves such destruction that they wont let foreign journalists in to see the damage that's been wreaked.

Not to evoke Godwin's Law here, but it sure looks like they learned more than we thought during the concentration camps. They're certainly applying those lessons well on everyone else. And I'm very quickly falling into the camp that says it's high time we shut down this geo-political experiment. If the Israelis want to live there, they're gonna have to learn how to be far better neighbours than they've proven themselves to be in the last twenty years.
