America’s Class System: Tackling a Taboo Subject

One reader says he earned his place on the income ladder. He and another reader defend sending children to private schools.

There are classes in the U.S.
The classes have not been hereditary for about a century.
Wealth, other than great wealth, was all new wealth.
The old money machines stopped working in the fall of 1929.
Those mechanisms were new in 1875 and 1914.

I Picked Prison Over Fighting in Vietnam

At stake was not just the nation’s soul but also mine. I was locked up for almost two years because I refused to be drafted.

I searched my mind and found I had no objection to killing my fellow humans.  I had great objections to killing at another's
orders.  Others were resisting the draft to send a message.
I took the way of delay and eventually sought psychiatric help.  That worked.  I went and was counted at public events.   One more among many.
I discovered the limits of my education and the damage I had done myself in the process.
Healing is slow for me also.
