A Democrat in a historically Republican state, Ms. Mofford was governor from 1988 to 1991, culminating 50 years in state government.

A Roosevelt Democrat. working in an elitist system.

Americans Appear Willing to Pay for a Carbon Tax Policy

A poll suggests that people are willing, on average, to pay more than an effective climate policy is projected to cost.

I am unconvinced by this statistical argument.
The comparison cost is now wrong.
We are more dependent on fossil carbon than we were.
The sampling method does not yield the the public willingness to pay beyond the willingness to pay a specific price.

Burdensome Labor Rules

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce criticizes new regulations for federal contractors as redundant and costly.

The new rules are burdensome to the Federal government.
The government is willing to pay.

The Chamber of Commerce has no argument.
Its proper response is silence.

The Upshot

Actually, Income in Rural America Is Growing, Too

A widely reported fact from the new Census Bureau turns out, on closer inspection, to be wrong.

Sampling works or it does not work.
Do not argue both ways in the same article.

Rural income has fallen.
Sprawl continues driven by 'real property' taxes.

Ethiopian Marathoner Planned His Defiant Gesture

Feyisa Lilesa, who won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, said his action was a show of solidarity with his people against a repressive government.

Ethiopia has had war.

It is an empire that has not been "reconstructed" as a nation state.

Feyisa Lilesa should shelter here as long as he wishes.

Less Than Transparent: Journalists Fault Obama

The Society of Professional Journalists says the Obama administration has not been as transparent as a spokesman claims.

Politics continue.
Journalists do not form governments.
Their function is complaint.
These complaints do not help the electorate choose a successor.

When Juries Say Life and Judges Say Death

Evidence suggests that when judges override juries and hand down death sentences, the defendant is more likely to be ultimately exonerated.

A Debate Moderator’s Role

If a candidate lies, the moderator has an obligation to elicit the truth, a writer says.

The moderator's job is to enforce the ground rules.
The audience must judge the performance.
The press can do the fact checking after the stage is cleared.
There is no place for a spin room.

Ask the audience or be the audience if you care.

In ‘Avid Reader,’ a Celebrated Editor as Shepherd and Alchemist

Robert Gottlieb’s memoir is an indispensable publishing history, thick with instruction and useful gossip about his dealings with famous writers.

Think of the function as similar to that of the motion picture producer.
A book editor is a book producer.
A book is a work that stands on its own composed of text and graphics which may include pictures.
