Trigger Warnings, Safe Spaces and Free Speech, Too

A little-heads up about uncomfortable and complex topics isn’t coddling. It helps students engage with one another.

Homes for Sale in New York and New Jersey

This week’s properties are five-bedroom homes in Lloyd Neck, N.Y., and Little Silver, N.J.

These are rustic villas built for the new wealthy.
Let us rusticate properly.
When my maternal great grandparents were trying to run from TB they bought a small farm on the outskirts of Clinton N.Y.   When that did not work they went up the hill to Otter Lake.

A Robot May Be Training to Do Your Job. Don’t Panic.

Robots that can recognize emotions are in development, and they could someday move into roles reserved for humans. But it’s an opportunity, not a threat.

Japan has the special circumstance of a shrinking population that allows for mechanical entry level workers.  The formal and near slave based culture do not hurt the process.

Minority Youth Mistrust Police. A Brooklyn High School Has a Plan.

At a transfer school in Coney Island, an elective class aims to bridge the gap between officers and young people from a poor, minority community.

The police must wait for the civilian response (the first shot).

A False Conviction Is Overturned, but the System That Allowed It Remains

Proof of Wayne Martin’s innocence was buried during his 2010 murder trial. On Wednesday, the Brooklyn district attorney moved to dismiss all charges.

Properly discovery should be required on pain of disbarment of the judge and prosecution.

Whereabouts of Cast-Out Police Officers? Other Cities Often Hire Them.

An Oregon officer was barred from taking another police job after a charge involving a child. Three months later, he was a police chief in Kansas. Experts say it’s a widespread problem.

A registry of police officers is necessary. There are those who have lost the right to serve as police.

The Return of Omniscience

The return of omniscient narrators might reflect the sense we all have, as internet users, of access to unlimited knowledge.

Old story:  A project to build a supercomputer delivers a product.
After a self check the owner has a first question: Is there a God?
After extensive processing the power switch is struck by lightning.
The teletype delivers a series of bells and three words - Now there is.

The author is "Choking at gnats and swallowing elephants whole."

Having extensive knowledge at ones fingertips is not having extensive knowledge.

‘Leave the Editorializing to Our Colleagues on the Opinion Side’

As the election nears, Times staffers have gotten another warning to play it safe on social media.

I do not expect reporters to be without opinions.  Bylines will reflect the opinions of the writers.  If those opinions do not reflect the opinions of the editor there is other employment.  The primary requirement is the body of the paper is factual.
Editorial pages writers are allowed to directly express their own opinions in the paper.
Personnel on the news side may not use the reputation of the paper to enhance their opinions.
