States Lead the Way on Justice Reform

While Congress continues to drag its feet, both red and blue states are showing how many ways there are to fix the broken justice system.

"In Congress, however, some recalcitrant lawmakers still cling to outdated or incorrect beliefs about crime and punishment in America. They need to pay close attention to the ingenuity and the record of the states."

New York Prison Guard Is Burned When Package Explodes at His Home

The 52-year-old corrections officer, whose name was not released, suffered serious burns to his hands and arms in the blast in Floyd, N.Y., the authorities said.

"“We’re very confident that others in the neighborhood are not in danger,” Sheriff Maciol said.
He would not describe the package in greater detail or discuss how sophisticated the explosive device was. But he said that it was clear the device was intentionally placed outside the home and that investigators were working to determine who was responsible."

They will not call the package a bomb or the motive revenge.

How do you keep your phone from being stolen? We assembled some creative ideas to thwart the thieves.

Leave the valuables in a safe place.

Keep them at the bottom of the beach bag under the sandals, sunscreen and towel.

Life After Wrongful Conviction

It’s a game of chance. Where you spent your prison years determines how much help you get — if you get any.

It is important to everyone that there are no wrongful convictions.
An exonerated person cannot be made whole.

"IAGO Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls:
 Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands:
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him
 And makes me poor indeed."

The government must attempt the feat of restoring the former prisoner's good name.

Gang Violence at Rikers Seizes Spotlight During Guards’ Trial in ’12 Beating

A Rikers Island inmate’s association with the Bloods street gang has elevated the issue in the Bronx trial of nine guards accused in his assault.

These issues are distractions at this trial.
The question of fact is the beating and the perpetrators of the beating.

Take Low-Salt Advice With a Grain of You Know What

A new study adds to the research suggesting that diets very low in salt are not beneficial for everyone, and may in fact be harmful for some.

Government recommendations are slow to change.
I will slightly increase my salt intake.
